Géographie et position dans le Trentin-Haut-Adige
La Valle di Cembra se situe dans le Trentin centre-oriental, au nord-est de Trente, et est traversée par le torrent Avisio qui descend des Dolomites de Fiemme vers la vallée de l'Adige. Le district comprend les communes de Cembra Lisignago, Segonzano, Giovo, Faver, Grauno, Grumes et Valda, réparties sur un fond de vallée étroit et sur des versants terrassés qui montent abruptement vers les bois montagnards. La géologie porphyrique, de couleur rouge-violacé, caractérise aussi bien le paysage que l'économie locale, liée depuis des siècles à l'extraction de la pierre et à la viticulture héroïque sur des gradins soutenus par des murets en pierre sèche.
Histoire et identité du territoire
The identity of the valley is linked to two historical activities: the extraction of porphyry, a volcanic rock used for centuries for paving and building works throughout Europe, and the cultivation of vines on terraces built by hand generation after generation. Cembra, the natural capital of the district, has hosted a traditional exhibition dedicated to local wines for decades, a testament to a deep-rooted wine culture. The small centers of Segonzano, Giovo, and the surrounding hamlets preserve a rural layout of farmsteads, historic churches, and paths through vineyards that tell of a long-standing relationship between the community and the rugged territory.
Landscape and nature
The landscape of the Valle di Cembra is dominated by porphyry terraces that create staircases of vineyards on the steep valley sides, a panorama that unfolds along the Strada del Vino della Valle di Cembra amidst scenic hairpin bends. The Avisio stream flows entrenched in a gorge that alternates wooded sections with rocky walls, while at higher altitudes the territory rises towards coniferous forests and pastures on the edge of the Piné plateau and the Fiemme Dolomites. The Earth Pyramids of Segonzano, badlands formations crowned by large balancing boulders, are one of the most unique and recognizable geomorphological elements in all of Trentino.
Villages and places to see
Cembra Lisignago, born from the merger of the municipalities of Cembra and Lisignago, is the reference center of the valley, with its historic core overlooking terraced vineyards and the historic seat of local wine events. Segonzano, in addition to the famous Earth Pyramids, offers a compact settlement and panoramic viewpoints over the Avisio gorge. Giovo, nestled on a sunny slope towards the Val di Cembra and the Adige valley, alternates vineyards and orchards with its hamlets. The picture is completed by the small municipalities of Faver, Grauno, Grumes, and Valda, rural villages that preserve churches, farmsteads, and scenic trails among the terraces.
Food and wine and traditions
The Cembra Valley is one of Trentino's most distinctive wine-growing areas, known above all for Müller Thurgau, an aromatic white wine that finds an ideal terroir here thanks to the altitude of the vineyards and the porphyry soils, as well as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown on the same terraces. Heroic viticulture, practiced on slopes that often require manual labor, is at the heart of the local agricultural identity along with berries, apples, and products from mountain farmsteads. The Cembra Valley Wine Route connects wineries, tasting points, and vineyard views, offering a food and wine itinerary that intertwines landscape and local flavors.
