Segonzano in the Cembra Valley, on the Avisio
Segonzano is located in the Cembra Valley, the valley carved by the Avisio stream along the left bank of the Adige River, which connects the valley floor of Trento with the higher Fiemme and Fassa valleys. The municipality, of a scattered type, brings together the main village and about fifteen hamlets distributed between the sunny slopes around 660-700 meters above sea level and the higher plateaus towards Piné, in a territory of about twenty square kilometers that borders Sover, Baselga di Piné, and the other municipalities of the valley. The Avisio, a stream with an irregular water regime capable of going from a few tens of cubic meters per second to impetuous floods, has carved the valley floor over millennia and shaped the slopes on which vineyards, woods, and the small inhabited centers of Segonzano now stretch, among which the main village stands out, gathered around the parish church and the remains of the castle.
The Pyramids of Segonzano
The undisputed symbol of Segonzano are the Earth Pyramids, extraordinary geological formations born from the erosive action of water on a morainic deposit left about fifty thousand years ago by the Quaternary Würm glaciers. Over time, the rain has carved out the loose soil, sparing the columns of earth and pebbles protected at the top by a porphyry boulder which, acting as a natural canopy, prevented the underlying material from being washed away: the result is spires that can exceed forty meters in height, gathered in a natural amphitheater at an altitude of about 875 meters. The local inhabitants have always called them 'Omeni de Segonzan', as if they were stone and earth sentinels guarding the valley. Reachable via a path through the woods, the pyramids are today one of the best-known and most photographed natural attractions in all of Trentino, a destination for hikers, photographers, and schools on educational visits.
The Castle and its history: Dürer's passage
Above the inhabited area stand the remains of Segonzano Castle, built in 1216 by Rodolfo Scancio after receiving feudal investiture in the territory. The fortification, which controlled the valley and the communication routes along the Avisio, was severely damaged in November 1796, when the area became the scene of clashes between French and Austrian troops as part of the military campaigns in northern Italy, leaving its walls largely in ruins; a restoration intervention between 2006 and 2007 consolidated the surviving structures. Segonzano Castle also has a connection with art history: in 1495, the German painter and engraver Albrecht Dürer, forced to deviate his itinerary towards Venice due to a flood of the Adige River, crossed the Cembra Valley and depicted the castle in a famous watercolor, along with a mill and views of the valley, leaving one of the oldest figurative testimonies of the local landscape.
Terraced vineyards and porphyry
