Sover between the Cembra Valley and the Fiemme Valley
Sover is situated at an altitude of over 830 meters on a plateau that acts as a link between the Cembra Valley, the porphyry valley carved by the Avisio stream, and the Fiemme Valley. While sharing some geographical identity with the latter, the municipality remains administratively linked to the Community of the Cembra Valley, along with Albiano, Cembra Lisignago, Giovo, Lona-Lases, and Segonzano. The municipal territory borders municipalities in both the Cembra Valley, such as Segonzano, Lona-Lases, and Altavalle, and the Fiemme Valley, such as Capriana and Valfloriana, as well as Bedollo, on the Pinè Plateau. This border position between two valleys and two distinct alpine identities makes Sover a privileged observation point, suspended between the cultivated valley floor and the first foothills of the Lagorai. It also makes it a less-traveled but authentic stop for those who wish to discover central Trentino away from the main tourist flows.
The woods, the panoramas, and the outdoor vocation
The distinctive feature of Sover is its silvo-pastoral character: a large part of the municipal territory is covered by coniferous and broad-leaved forests, interspersed with pastures and small cultivated plots around the hamlets. From the capital, gathered around the church of San Lorenzo, the view spans a wide panorama exposed on the western slope of Monte Frattoni, with views encompassing the valley below and the surrounding mountains. This wooded vocation has also marked the architecture of the village, with rustic houses adorned with sacred frescoes and roofs with colored tiles from the historic kilns of Molina di Fiemme, a testament to a woodworking tradition dating back to the 17th century. It is no coincidence that Sover is today a reference point for those seeking quiet outdoor tourism, made up of walks in the woods, fresh high-altitude air, and a pace of life far from the worldly glamour of the region's most famous resorts.
The porphyry of the valley and the hamlets of Sover
Sover belongs to the left bank of the Valle di Cembra, a community known worldwide for the extraction of porphyry, the reddish volcanic rock that covers squares and facades across half of Europe and which emerges here from a substrate of rhyolites formed about 270 million years ago. Unlike the neighboring municipalities of Albiano and Lases, where porphyry quarries still mark the landscape and economy today, Sover's territory has not developed its own extraction activity, remaining faithful to a more agricultural and forestry dimension. The municipality is divided into eight hamlets scattered on the slope, including Piscine, nestled on a green terrace, and Montesover, a small alpine nucleus known for raspberry and mushroom picking, as well as Facendi, Montalto, Piazzoli, Settefontane, Slosseri, and Sveseri: a mosaic of small villages that preserves a distinct rural identity compared to the valley centers linked to stone.
The trails, the Lagorai woods, and nature
From Montesover, a forest road climbs towards Malga Vernera, the starting point for numerous trails that delve into the heart of Lagorai, the chain of dark and wild mountains stretching south of Val di Fiemme, between spruce forests and blueberry expanses. The municipal territory is also crossed by small watercourses, such as the one descending into the Rio delle Bore valley, and by areas of naturalistic interest such as the Lavini di Croce, often intermediate stops on longer walks towards high-altitude pastures. Walking through the hamlets, clearings, dense woods, and small panoramic plateaus alternate, in a landscape that gradually changes altitude and retains a wild character even a short distance from the main town. It is a territory designed for a peaceful excursion rather than for sporting performance, ideal for those seeking direct contact with the lesser-known Trentino mountains.
History and experiences in Sover
The history of Sover is also told by its municipal coat of arms, a three-peaked mountain surmounted by a red gridiron, a symbol of the martyrdom of San Lorenzo, the town's patron saint, flanked by two laurel branches that recall the clashes sustained by local militias against Napoleonic troops. In the main town, the church of San Lorenzo houses three Baroque wooden altars, while in the hamlets, there is the church of San Leonardo in Montesover and that of Santa Barbara in Piscine, testimonies of a widespread religiosity throughout the territory. Today, the life of the town still revolves around seasonal rhythms, from mushroom and raspberry picking in autumn to summer walks towards Lagorai, while the proximity to the Pyramids of Segonzano, in the neighboring municipality of Segonzano, offers an opportunity for a half-day excursion between geology and the landscape of the Cembra Valley.
