La Val di Sole si trova nella parte nord-occidentale del Trentino, all'interno della provincia autonoma di Trento, e si estende lungo il corso del fiume Noce tra il Passo del Tonale e la stretta di Mostizzolo. La valle è delimitata a nord dal massiccio dell'Ortles-Cevedale e dal Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio, a sud dalle Dolomiti di Brenta e dal Parco Naturale Adamello-Brenta. Comprende comuni come Malé, capoluogo storico, Dimaro Folgarida, Commezzadura, Ossana, Vermiglio, Peio, Rabbi, Caldes e Croviana, ciascuno affacciato sulla valle principale o sulle laterali Val di Peio e Val di Rabbi.
Storia e identità del territorio
The Val di Sole has a long history linked to the border, mountain trade, and the defense of the passes towards Trentino and Lombardy. A testament to this past is Castel San Michele in Ossana, a medieval fortification controlling the valley and access to the Tonale Pass, which was also the scene of events related to the Great War fought on the surrounding peaks. The place names and local traditions still preserve the legacy of the Trentino Alpine culture, made up of small agricultural and pastoral communities that over the centuries have adapted to a harsh environment, developing a strong sense of valley identity shared among the different villages of the valley.
Landscape and nature
The Val di Sole is crossed by the Noce River, an Alpine watercourse known throughout Europe for rafting and international canoe slalom competitions. The valley is nestled between two large protected areas: the Stelvio National Park, with the glaciers and peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale group, and the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, which houses coniferous forests, Alpine lakes, and the Dolomite walls of the Brenta. The side valleys of Peio and Rabbi add high mountain environments with peat bogs, waterfalls, and mountain pastures, while the valley floor offers a cycle path connecting the various villages, making the territory accessible to hikers and cycle tourists.
The villages and main places to see
Malé, the valley's capital, preserves a historic center with buildings in the Trentino style and serves as a hub for services and connections. Dimaro Folgarida is known for its access to the Folgarida-Marilleva ski area, connected to the Presanella Group and the slopes of the Val di Sole. Ossana houses the aforementioned Castel San Michele, while Vermiglio, at the foot of the Tonale Pass, represents the gateway to Lombardy and the mountains of World War I. Peio, in the homonymous side valley, is famous for the Terme di Peio, a thermal spa that utilizes local mineral waters, as well as for its access to the Stelvio National Park.
Food and traditions
The cuisine of Val di Sole reflects the peasant and alpine tradition of Trentino, with mountain pasture cheeses, the typical Casolet produced in the valley, smoked cured meats, and polenta as a staple of the valley's tables. Among the local products, Trentino apples grown in the valley floor, berries, and mushrooms gathered from the surrounding woods stand out, as well as spirits like grappa. The alpine pastures, scattered along the slopes of the valley and the side valleys of Peio and Rabbi, remain reference points for purchasing and tasting cheeses and dairy products made using traditional methods, often during local festivals and village celebrations linked to the agricultural calendar.
