Ossana is located in the Val di Sole, in western Trentino, at the point where the main valley meets the entrance to the Val di Peio, the side branch that leads up to the Stelvio National Park and the glaciers of the Ortles-Cevedale group. The village stands on a sunny terrace at the foot of the Presanella massif, at just over 1,000 meters above sea level, in a position that for centuries made it a mandatory crossroads for those traveling up the valley towards the Alpine passes or heading towards Peio and its thermal baths. The inhabited center, with a few hundred inhabitants, has retained the layout of an ancient mountain village, with narrow alleys, stone houses, and arcades that cluster around the main square. This authentic identity was officially recognized in 2021, when Ossana joined the circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, a mark of distinction that rewards the best-preserved historic centers in the country and has helped to make the village known beyond the borders of the Val di Sole.
The Castle of San Michele, sentinel of the valley
The symbolic monument of Ossana is the Castle of San Michele, built on a rocky spur that dominates the town and the entire Val di Sole. Its origins probably date back to the Lombard period, when the hill hosted an outpost for controlling the Alpine transit routes; between the 8th and 11th centuries, a church dedicated to Saint Michael was built there, while between the 12th and 14th centuries, the Bishopric of Trento built a palace and a curia for the administration and collection of valley taxes. In the 15th century, the Lombard family Federici undertook important fortification works, bringing the castle to its peak splendor, with a double curtain wall, a defensive rondel, and the Romanesque tower about 25 meters high that still dominates the profile of the village today. After centuries of military decline and a fire in 1777 that marked its abandonment, the manor became the property of the Autonomous Province of Trento in 1992, which oversaw its restoration completed in 2014, and today it is open to visitors with routes through walls, courtyards, and the small chapel.
The Village of Nativity Scenes and Christmas traditions
Ossana is known throughout Trentino as the Village of Nativity Scenes, an event that every year, from late November until Epiphany, transforms the streets of the historic center into a widespread Christmas itinerary. Hundreds of nativity scenes, created by the inhabitants with the most diverse techniques and materials, from wood to stone, from ceramics to recycled materials, are set up in niches, courtyards, barns, and windowsills throughout the town, creating a solemn atmosphere that attracts visitors from outside the valley. The event has its roots in the popular devotion linked to the Church of San Vigilio, the parish church located in the heart of the village, whose first works date back to 1180, making it one of the oldest in the upper Val di Sole, housing precious marble and wooden altars. Alongside the Village of Nativity Scenes, Ossana keeps other seasonal traditions alive, such as the Fera dei Sét and the Fiera di San Michele in September, occasions when the town comes alive with markets, local products, and community moments linked to the rhythm of the mountain seasons.
The parks, the Noce river, and nature between Stelvio and Adamello-Brenta
The territory of Ossana enjoys a privileged position between two of the most important protected area systems in the Italian Alps: the Stelvio National Park, which opens up just above the town along the Val di Peio, and the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, which extends across the opposite side of the Val di Sole. This proximity makes Ossana an ideal starting point for excursions to diverse environments, from coniferous forests to high-altitude meadows, up to the glaciers of the Ortles-Cevedale group and the peaks of the Brenta. The town is also crossed by the Noce stream, which originates not far from the glaciers in the area and descends with impetuous waters towards the valley floor, feeding some of the most popular rafting and canyoning stretches in Trentino. Ossana's sky, little affected by light pollution, has received recognition for the quality of astronomical observation, so much so that it is listed among the ideal destinations for stargazing in Trentino, a further reason for those seeking authentic contact with the mountains in every season.
History, skiing and experiences in Val di Sole
The history of Ossana is marked by the strategic garrison role that San Michele Castle has played for centuries along the communication routes of the upper Val di Sole, first as a control outpost and then as an administrative center of the Bishopric of Trento. This connecting vocation between the valley floor and the side valleys is still reflected today in the town's economy, which combines tourism, mountain agriculture, and craftsmanship. In winter, Ossana is a convenient base for reaching the ski resorts of Folgarida-Marilleva and Passo del Tonale, while in summer it offers excursions, walks through the hamlets, and the discovery of typical products, first and foremost the Casolét della Val di Sole, a raw milk cheese recognized as a Slow Food Presidium for its delicacy. Between a visit to the castle, a walk through the nativity scene village in winter, and trails towards the parks in summer, Ossana offers a complete Val di Sole experience, capable of combining historical memory and daily mountain life.
