La Val di Fassa si trova nella parte orientale del Trentino, percorsa dal torrente Avisio e chiusa da alcuni dei massicci dolomitici più celebri: il Catinaccio e il Latemar a ovest, il gruppo del Sella e il Sassolungo a nord-est, la Marmolada a sud-est. La valle collega, attraverso i passi Sella, Pordoi, Fedaia, Costalunga e San Pellegrino, il Trentino all'Alto Adige e al Veneto, rendendola da sempre un crocevia naturale tra culture alpine diverse. I sette comuni della valle, da Moena a Canazei, si allineano lungo il fondovalle a quote comprese tra i 1000 e i 1450 metri circa.
Storia e identità della comunità ladina
Val di Fassa is one of the Ladin valleys of the Dolomites, where Fassano Ladin has been spoken for centuries, a language of Rhaeto-Romance origin that is recognized and protected. The Comun General de Fascia organization today represents the seven municipalities of the valley and promotes its language, bilingual school, and traditions. Local history intertwines the ancient economy of mountain pastures and forests, mining, and the passage, in the 20th century, of borders between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy, with traces still visible in the forts and trenches of the Great War on the surrounding Dolomites. The Museo Ladin de Fascia in Vigo di Fassa preserves this memory.
Landscape and nature between Catinaccio, Sella, and Marmolada
The landscape of Val di Fassa is dominated by the pink spires of Catinaccio, linked to the legend of King Laurin and his rose garden, and by the Vajolet Towers, among the symbolic images of the Dolomites. To the north extends the rocky plateau of Sella, with the nearby Sassolungo, while to the southeast Marmolada, at 3343 meters, is the highest peak in the Dolomites and hosts the only glacier in the range. The entire area is part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site and the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park on the Moena side, with spruce and larch forests and high-altitude pastures.
Villages and main places to see
Canazei, at the foot of the Sella and Marmolada, is the highest and most frequented center in the valley, a starting point for the Sellaronda ski lifts. Campitello di Fassa preserves a historic nucleus gathered under the Sassolungo. Moena, nicknamed the 'Fairy of the Dolomites', is the lowest municipality and preserves a beautiful center with the church of San Vigilio. Pozza di Fassa, with the nearby hamlet of Vigo di Fassa, is among the liveliest centers, home to the Museo Ladin de Fascia. Soraga di Fassa and Mazzin complete the picture with their more intimate and traditional atmosphere.
Food and mountain traditions
The cuisine of Val di Fassa is rooted in the Ladin and Trentino mountain tradition. Puzzone di Moena, a PDO cheese with a characteristic intense aroma, is the valley's most distinctive product along with Tosela, a typical fresh cheese. Among the dishes are canederli (dumplings), strangolapreti (spinach gnocchi), orzotto (barley risotto), and cialzogn, a Ladin-style filled ravioli. Speck, mountain cured meats, and desserts like papassini are also available. In summer, the valley's mountain huts offer tastings of local cheeses and dairy products, while winter accompanies the refuge cuisine with hearty dishes designed for skiers and hikers.
