The Altopiano di Piné and Its Lakes
The Altopiano di Piné is a broad plateau in Trentino stretching north-east of Trento, at an altitude of roughly 900 to 1,000 metres, covered in fir and larch woods, meadows and small villages. Baselga di Piné is its main centre, an ideal starting point for exploring the whole area. The plateau owes much of its fame to its lakes, formed in ancient basins, which give the landscape a character unlike the rest of mountainous Trentino. The mild summer climate and moderate altitude have made Piné a holiday destination since the early decades of the twentieth century, when families from Trento and beyond began visiting the plateau to escape the heat of the valleys. Today the area combines a tourist vocation, mountain agriculture and a network of services suited to family, sporting and nature-based stays, keeping an atmosphere more intimate than the larger alpine resorts of Trentino.
Lake Serraia and Lake delle Piazze
The two main lakes of the plateau, Lake Serraia and Lake delle Piazze, are the true stars of summer in Piné. Lake Serraia, the larger of the two, is fringed by grassy, equipped beaches, bathing facilities, picnic areas and a lakeside path running around its perimeter, popular with families, swimmers and non-motorised watersports enthusiasts. Lake delle Piazze, smaller and more secluded, generally offers warmer waters and is appreciated for quiet swimming and activities suited to children. Both lakes are open for bathing during the summer season and form the meeting point between the plateau's lake-based tourism and its network of walks, with flat paths connecting the two shores to the nearby villages. Having two lakes just minutes apart is one of the features that sets Piné apart from other mountain areas of Trentino.
The Ice Rink Piné
The Ice Rink Piné, known in Italian as Stadio del ghiaccio di Piné, is one of the world's most celebrated venues for long-track speed skating. Located at altitude, it benefits from favourable climatic conditions that allow high-quality natural ice for much of the winter season, a requirement sought after by international athletes for both training and competition. Over the years the venue has hosted internationally significant races, helping to make Baselga di Piné a recognised name among speed skating enthusiasts worldwide. Besides competitive events, the rink is used by national teams on training camps and by amateur skaters, and has become a symbol of the plateau's sporting identity, standing alongside its tourist and hiking vocation with a solid tradition tied to top-level winter sport.
The Sanctuary of the Comparsa (Madonna di Piné)
The Sanctuary of the Comparsa, dedicated to the Madonna di Piné, is one of the plateau's most significant places of worship and a pilgrimage destination for the faithful from across Trentino and beyond. The sanctuary preserves the memory of a Marian apparition and is set within the natural surroundings typical of Piné, among woods and meadows that invite quiet reflection. Throughout the year the site hosts religious celebrations, community prayer gatherings and visits from simple hikers drawn by its tranquillity, making it also a place of historical and devotional interest for anyone visiting the plateau. Together with the lakes and the ice rink, the sanctuary helps define the identity of Baselga di Piné as a place where nature, sport and spirituality coexist within a compact area with a surprisingly varied range of attractions.
Holidays, Sport and Nature on the Plateau
Baselga di Piné and the whole plateau have long had a vocation for quiet holidays suited to families, hikers and sports enthusiasts alike. A dense network of paths crosses woods, meadows and lakeshores, allowing walks of every level, from flat strolls around the lakes to more demanding hikes towards the plateau's scenic viewpoints. In summer, Lake Serraia and Lake delle Piazze draw swimmers and families, while in winter snow and the ice rink attract winter sports enthusiasts. The plateau also offers mountain-biking routes, play areas for children and a spread of accommodation, keeping a more intimate character than the larger alpine destinations of Trentino. This combination of lakes, trails, sport and religious tradition makes Piné a destination able to meet diverse needs, while remaining an accessible getaway close to Trento for a day trip or a longer stay.
