Un territorio tra le Dolomiti di Brenta e il Lago d'Idro
Il comprensorio delle Giudicarie occupa l'angolo sud-occidentale del Trentino-Alto Adige, incuneato tra le Dolomiti di Brenta, il massiccio dell'Adamello-Presanella e il confine con la provincia di Brescia. Il territorio si estende lungo due valli principali, la Val Rendena, percorsa dal fiume Sarca, e la Val del Chiese, che scende verso il Lago d'Idro, includendo anche le conche di Bleggio, Lomaso, Banale e Comano. Il capoluogo amministrativo è Tione di Trento, mentre Storo segna l'estremo lembo meridionale verso la Lombardia. La varietà altimetrica, dai fondovalle ai quasi quattromila metri della Presanella, rende le Giudicarie una delle aree più diverse del Trentino.

The name Giudicarie derives from the Latin iudicaria, a district administered by a judge on behalf of the Bishop of Trento, who from the Middle Ages exercised temporal power here as a Prince-Bishopric. Stenico Castle, the seat of the episcopal vicars from the 13th century, bears witness to this long ecclesiastical dominion, which lasted until the Napoleonic era. The valleys, historically poor and isolated, developed an economy based on pastoralism, cheesemaking, and seasonal emigration, with strong identity ties that survive in local dialects and community traditions. Since the 20th century, tourism, first thermal and then mountain-related, has complemented agriculture as an economic driver of the territory.
Landscape and nature between Adamello-Brenta and Val di Daone
Le Giudicarie opens onto the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, the largest protected area in Trentino, which safeguards glaciers, alpine lakes, forests, and the brown bear population reintroduced from the 1990s onwards. Val Rendena runs at the foot of the Brenta group and the Adamello-Presanella peaks, while Val di Daone preserves glacial environments of great charm. Coniferous forests, alpine pastures, and glacier-fed streams create a still largely unspoiled alpine landscape, appreciated for summer hiking and for skiing in the area of Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo, the historic gateway to the Brenta Dolomites.
Villages and places to see
Tione di Trento, the district capital, is the main service center of the valley. Comano Terme is known throughout Italy for its thermal waters, used for centuries to treat psoriasis and other skin conditions. Stenico preserves one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Trentino, for centuries the seat of episcopal power over the Giudicarie. Storo, in the lower Val del Chiese, marks the border with Lombardy. Pinzolo houses a famous fresco of the Dance of Death in the church of San Vigilio, while Madonna di Campiglio, founded as a 19th-century tourist resort, is now one of the most renowned ski destinations in the Alps.
Food and traditions of the Giudicarie
The cuisine of the Giudicarie reflects its pastoral and mountain vocation. Spressa delle Giudicarie DOP, a semi-fat hard cheese, is the symbolic dairy product of the territory, along with Casolét and alpine pasture butter. Trout farmed in the streams and mushrooms from the coniferous forests enrich the local table, as do potato tortelli and polenta, traditional accompaniments to game and cured meat dishes. The season for berries and porcini mushrooms attracts hikers and gourmets every autumn, while the alpine pastures still offer direct tastings of mountain cheeses.
