San Lorenzo Dorsino is a municipality born on January 1, 2015, from the merger of San Lorenzo in Banale and Dorsino, in the heart of the Valle del Banale, in the Giudicarie Esteriori of western Trentino, at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites. The municipal territory, which includes the hamlets of Andogno, Deggia, Dorsino, Moline, Nembia, San Lorenzo in Banale, the municipal seat, and Tavodo, extends from the cultivated valley floor, through woods and pastures, in a landscape that rises from the threshold of 758 meters to the peaks of Cima Tosa and Cima d'Ambiez, well over 3,000 meters, within the Adamello Brenta Natural Park. The village of San Lorenzo in Banale, listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy, preserves a rural layout made of stone farmhouses, loggias, and paved alleys; Dorsino, on the other hand, houses the church of San Giorgio with frescoes by Cristoforo II Baschenis. Connecting the two centers is also an identity product, the ciuìga del Banale, a Slow Food Presidium born from the peasant poverty of the past. Between paths towards Val d'Ambiez, Lake Nembia, and the traces of Castel Mani castle, San Lorenzo Dorsino tells an authentic Trentino, suspended between peasant history and Dolomite landscapes.

San Lorenzo Dorsino in the Valle del Banale, at the foot of the Brenta

San Lorenzo Dorsino is a municipality born on January 1, 2015, from the merger of San Lorenzo in Banale and Dorsino, two centers in the Giudicarie Esteriori that share the Valle del Banale, the open basin at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites between the Paganella Plateau and the Terme di Comano. It is not the first time the two villages have lived under a single administration: as early as 1927 a decree had reunited them into a single municipality, then separated in 1954 and reunited almost sixty years later. The municipal territory, of almost 74 km², today includes the hamlets of Andogno, Deggia, Dorsino, Moline, Nembia, San Lorenzo in Banale, municipal seat at 758 meters, and Tavodo, for a total of about 1,500 inhabitants. From the cultivated valley floor, the landscape rises rapidly towards pastures and Dolomite walls, entering the boundaries of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, the largest protected area in Trentino.

San Lorenzo in Banale, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, and its farmhouses

San Lorenzo in Banale is part of the circuit of The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, a recognition that certifies the value of its historic center, which grew around the ancient Sette Ville del Banale. The masi, traditional rural houses of the Giudicarie Esteriori, give character to the village: stone buildings with slatted loggias for drying crops, stables on the ground floor, dwellings on the upper floors, and at the top, a hayloft often reachable by a driveway ramp called pont, as in the exemplary case of Casa Mazoleti. The alleys are paved with salesà, the local stone that still accompanies walks between arches, portals, and small courtyards. Among the hamlets, Senaso preserves the most intact fabric, while other nuclei like Pergnano were partly rebuilt after the 19th-century fires that repeatedly affected the territory.

La ciuìga del Banale, Slow Food Presidium

The symbolic product of San Lorenzo Dorsino is la ciuìga del Banale, a unique cured meat recognized as a Slow Food Presidium and Traditional Agri-food Product. It originates from the poverty that marked the Giudicarie Esteriori for centuries: peasant families sold the best cuts of meat and used pork scraps along with a large quantity of turnips, which can make up to 35-40% of the mixture, to still obtain a nutritious cured meat to consume during the cold months. The turnips are cooked and squeezed, mixed with shoulder meat, neck, pancetta, and throat, seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic, stuffed into natural casing, and smoked for about eight days. Fresh ciuìga is consumed boiled and served with potatoes, savoy cabbage, or polenta, while more aged ciuìga can be sliced like salami. Production, linked to the tradition of winter slaughtering, is still preserved today by a single local entity, the Famiglia Cooperativa Brenta Paganella, founded at the end of the 19th century by Don Lorenzo Guetti.

The Brenta Dolomites, Val d'Ambiez, and the nature of the Park

The territory of San Lorenzo Dorsino opens towards the heart of the Brenta Dolomites, the only Dolomite group west of the Adige river and part of the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. From San Lorenzo in Banale, the main access to Val d'Ambiez begins, a valley of glacial origin that rises up to Cima Tosa, the highest point of the Brenta with its 3,173 meters, between the Cacciatore and Silvio Agostini huts and the chamois, golden eagles, and lammergeiers that frequent these altitudes. Along the path, one encounters the so-called Fossil Cemetery, where remains of bivalves from about 195 million years ago emerge, a testament to the ancient tropical seas that once extended here. Further down, the small Lake Nembia, just south of Lake Molveno, offers beaches, play areas, and a roughly 3 km loop trail connecting them, suitable for family walks and cycling along the shores.

History and experiences between Castel Mani and the territory

For centuries, the territory was part of the ancient Nove Ville del Banale, organized into Comun Grande and Comun Pichol, under the jurisdiction of the Prince-Bishop of Trento until the 1800s, when after the Congress of Vienna, the Giudicarie passed to the County of Tyrol. Above San Lorenzo in Banale, the remains of Castel Mani are preserved, a medieval castle documented since 1207, when the Bishop of Trento invested Uldarico d'Arco with it: damaged by Napoleonic invasions in the late 18th century and partly dismantled as a stone quarry in the 19th century, today only a perimeter wall remains in a public garden. In Dorsino, the church of San Giorgio houses frescoes attributed to Cristoforo II Baschenis, from the famous family of fresco painters from Bergamo active in Trentino. Those who visit San Lorenzo Dorsino today can combine history with concrete experiences: the Casa del Parco in San Lorenzo in Banale, the Ecomuseum of Judicaria, and the dense network of trails connecting the valley floor to the huts of the Brenta Dolomites.
