Bleggio Superiore in the Giudicarie Esteriori
Bleggio Superiore is part of the Giudicarie Esteriori, the area that also includes the Banale and Lomaso plateaus, nestled between the Val Rendena, Lake Garda and the city of Trento. It is a dispersed municipality: the territory, covering more than 32 square kilometres between 600 and over 1,600 metres of altitude, has no single centre but brings together thirteen hamlets of ancient rural origin, including Santa Croce del Bleggio, the seat of the town hall, alongside Rango, Bivedo, Balbido, Madice and other small settlements with dialect names. The municipality borders Tione di Trento, Ledro, Comano Terme and other Giudicarie communities, in a mid-mountain territory where chestnut woods give way to meadows and small terraced fields. For centuries this area was part of the Seven Parishes of the Giudicaries, communities that enjoyed relative administrative autonomy under the authority of the Prince-Bishopric of Trento, a historical legacy that has deeply marked local identity and traditions, still visible today in the rural architecture and place names of the hamlets.
The Walnut of Bleggio, a Slow Food Presidium
Walnuts are the symbol product of Bleggio Superiore, lending their name to the local variety, the Bleggiana walnut, a Slow Food Presidium since 2016. It is a small fruit, oval and rounded at the base, with a thin, fragile shell marked by pronounced furrows, which easily releases a light-coloured, oily kernel with a sweet, spiced flavour and a distinctive peppery note. For centuries walnut trees shaped the agricultural landscape of Bleggio, Banale and Lomaso: until the 1960s local walnuts were sold by the quintal on confectionery markets, especially in Naples. The gradual abandonment of traditional cultivation, replaced by more productive French varieties such as Lara and Franquette, drastically reduced the heritage of historic trees. Since 2016 the Confraternita della noce del Bleggio, the Bleggio Walnut Brotherhood, has carried forward a recovery project, with a nursery of grafted plants and new plantings. Today the walnut flavours bread, cakes, biscuits, oil and nocino liqueur, and a dedicated route, the Sentiero della Noce, lets visitors discover its territory.
The Sanctuary of Santa Croce and the Sentiero di San Vili
The religious heart of Bleggio Superiore is Santa Croce del Bleggio, the hamlet that gives its name to the municipal seat and owes its identity to a cross believed to be miraculous. According to tradition, a shepherd carved a cross from a larch trunk and placed it on nearby Monte San Martino; after several miracles were attributed to it, in 1624 it was carried in solemn procession to the parish church, where it is still venerated today. In 1863 a stone monument dedicated to the Holy Cross was inaugurated, designed by architect Wolfango Pietro Parolari, while the patronal feast is celebrated on 14 September. The Sentiero di San Vili also passes through here, a path of more than 100 kilometres between Trento and Madonna di Campiglio, which tradition holds retraces the routes of San Vigilio, bishop and patron saint of Trento. The stage that climbs toward the Giudicarie Esteriori crosses Bolbeno, Bleggio Superiore and Santa Croce, where a frescoed Romanesque church can be found, amid terraced fields, chestnut groves and restored mountain huts.
Parishes, Hamlets and Landscape
A dispersed municipality by vocation, Bleggio Superiore brings together thirteen hamlets, each with its own character: among the best known, besides Santa Croce, are Rango, Bivedo, Balbido, Madice, Cologna and Lundo, settlements born as Alpine farmsteads that grew until the late nineteenth century and were partly depopulated after the war. The most famous case is Rango, included since 2006 in the circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy: its name is said to derive from a Celtic term meaning a boundary, since the village marked the edge of the Pieve del Bleggio along an ancient route linking Lake Garda to the Val di Sole. Rango preserves an almost fortified layout, houses huddled together, porticos, passageways and covered vaulted walkways known locally as portech, alongside the eighteenth-century Church of Santa Lucia. In winter its old cellars and lofts, called vòlt, turn into a diffuse Christmas market, amid craftwork and local produce. The landscape alternates meadows, terraced fields bounded by stone walls, chestnut woods and the first foothills of the Brenta Dolomites.
History and Experiences
The history of Bleggio Superiore is that of the Seven Parishes of the Giudicaries, rural communities that for centuries kept forms of self-government under the often distant authority of the Prince-Bishopric of Trento. From this tradition of close-knit communities the Trentino cooperative movement was also born: in the Giudicarie Esteriori, between 1890 and 1892, Father Lorenzo Guetti founded the first rural savings banks and consumer cooperatives, a model later applied across the region. Today Bleggio Superiore lives on a rural economy weaving together agriculture, livestock farming and tourism: farmsteads and small farms sit alongside accommodation spread across the hamlets, while the closeness of the Terme di Comano thermal baths, just down the valley, offers a natural spa complement to a stay. A dense network of paths, including the Sentiero di San Vili and the Sentiero della Noce, links the villages through woods, terraced fields and viewpoints, making the plateau an ideal destination for slow tourism made of walking, history and local flavours.
