A district between the Brenta Dolomites and Lake Idro
The Giudicarie district occupies the south-western corner of Trentino-Alto Adige, wedged between the Brenta Dolomites, the Adamello-Presanella massif and the border with the province of Brescia. The territory stretches across two main valleys, Val Rendena, followed by the Sarca river, and Val del Chiese, which flows down toward Lake Idro, and also takes in the basins of Bleggio, Lomaso, Banale and Comano. The administrative hub is Tione di Trento, while Storo marks the southernmost edge toward Lombardy. Altitude ranges from valley floors to the nearly four-thousand-metre Presanella, making Giudicarie one of Trentino's most varied areas.
History and identity under the Prince-Bishop of Trento
The name Giudicarie comes from the Latin iudicaria, a district administered by a judge on behalf of the Prince-Bishop of Trento, who held temporal power here from the Middle Ages onward. Stenico Castle, seat of the episcopal vicars from the 13th century, bears witness to this long ecclesiastical rule, which lasted until the Napoleonic era. Historically poor and isolated, the valleys built an economy of pastoralism, cheesemaking and seasonal emigration, with strong local identities that survive in dialects and community traditions. Since the twentieth century, tourism, first thermal and later alpine, has grown alongside agriculture as an economic driver.
Landscape and nature between Adamello-Brenta and Val di Daone
Giudicarie opens onto the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, Trentino's largest protected area, which safeguards glaciers, alpine lakes, forests and the brown bear population reintroduced from the 1990s onward. Val Rendena runs at the foot of the Brenta massif and the Adamello-Presanella peaks, while Val di Daone preserves striking glacial landscapes. Conifer forests, alpine pastures and glacier-fed streams shape a still lightly built-up alpine landscape, valued for summer hiking and for skiing around Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo, historically the gateway to the Brenta Dolomites.
Villages and places to see
Tione di Trento, the district's main town, is the valley's principal service centre. Comano Terme is known across Italy for its thermal waters, used for centuries to treat psoriasis and other skin conditions. Stenico preserves one of Trentino's best-kept medieval castles, for centuries the seat of episcopal power over Giudicarie. Storo, in lower Val del Chiese, marks the border with Lombardy. Pinzolo's church of San Vigilio holds a celebrated Dance of Death fresco, while Madonna di Campiglio, born as a nineteenth-century resort, is today one of the Alps' most renowned ski destinations.
Food, wine and traditions of Giudicarie
Giudicarie cuisine reflects its pastoral, mountain character, shaped by centuries of alpine dairy farming and forest foraging. Spressa delle Giudicarie DOP, a semi-fat hard cheese, is the territory's signature dairy product, alongside Casolét and fresh alpine butter. Trout from mountain streams and mushrooms from the conifer forests enrich local tables, together with potato tortei and polenta, traditional accompaniments to game dishes and carne salada. Every autumn, the wild berry and porcini mushroom season draws hikers and food lovers alike, while alpine dairies still welcome visitors for direct tastings of their mountain cheeses.
