Tione, Crossroads of the Giudicarie
The municipality of Tione di Trento occupies a hinge position at the heart of the Giudicarie, the broad district of western Trentino that takes its name from the medieval judicial pievi. The town sits in a basin, locally known as the Busa, at the foot of Monte Gaggio, at the point where three valleys meet: the Val Rendena, climbing north toward Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio; the Valle del Chiese, opening west toward Bagolino and Lake Idro; and the Giudicarie Esteriori, descending south-east toward Comano Terme and Lake Garda. This crossroads position has made Tione, since the sixteenth century, the natural administrative centre of the whole territory, a role it still holds today with judicial, school, health and ecclesiastical offices serving the entire valley.
The Historic Centre and Its Monuments
The old core of Tione is traditionally divided into six historic districts — Brevine, Cantes, Ville, Pleù, Sivrè and Basso Arnò — much of which had to be rebuilt after the great fire of 21 August 1895, which devastated the town for more than a week. The main religious monument is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and San Giovanni Battista, which houses eight chapels linked by a nineteenth-century gallery, Renaissance wooden statues and frescoes attributed to Simone Baschenis. On the banks of the Sarca stands the small church of San Vigilio, with medieval frescoes and ties to the old pilgrimage route toward the Val Rendena. Among the districts, visitors can still follow the so-called giro delle fontane, a route touching the old stone basins of Brevine, Marconi, Pleù and Sivrè, a reminder of everyday village life before the arrival of piped water.
Gateway to the Val Rendena and the Brenta Dolomites
From Tione the road climbs into the Val Rendena, the green valley wedged between the Adamello-Presanella massif to the west and the Dolomiti di Brenta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the east, leading up to Pinzolo and to Madonna di Campiglio, the well-known mountain resort at 1,550 metres. For travellers coming from the Vallagarina or from Trento, Tione is the last town of any size before the road heads into the valley's villages and the first ski lifts, which is why it concentrates shops, fuel stations and services useful to anyone continuing toward the mountains. The same hub role applies in the opposite direction, toward the Valle del Chiese and the Giudicarie Esteriori, where the Comano Terme spa and smaller lakes offer a gentler alternative to high mountains. Tione, in short, works better as a logistical base than as a destination in itself, but that is exactly what makes it an essential reference point for anyone exploring the whole district.
The Landscape of the Sarca and the Woods of the Giudicarie
The Sarca river, which rises further upstream between the Adamello and Presanella mountain groups, flows through Tione together with the smaller Arnò stream, shaping the basin on which the town stands. The waters of the Sarca, popular with anglers for their trout, continue on toward Lake Garda after crossing the whole system of the Giudicarie valleys. Around the built-up area, on the slopes of Monte Gaggio, coniferous woods stretch up toward pastures and the first reaches of the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, whose protected area includes the Adamello, Brenta and Càdria mountain groups. Trails and hikes set out from Tione that reach these environments in relatively short time, offering a contrast between the cultivated, built-up valley floor and the still-wild mountains that open up just above the town.
History, Local Economy and Experiences
The history of Tione is rooted in the system of the Seven Pievi of the Giudicarie, the medieval judicial districts that enjoyed a degree of autonomy under the Prince-Bishopric of Trento. In 1522 Cardinal Bernardo Cles established the vicariate seat there, taking the role of capital away from Stenico; with the later abolition of the Prince-Bishopric, Tione became the permanent seat of the judicial, political and administrative offices of the whole district. In 1928 the suppressed municipalities of Bolbeno, Zuclo and Saone were merged into Tione; in 1952 Bolbeno and Zuclo became independent municipalities again, while Saone remained a hamlet, with its church of San Brizio rebuilt in the eighteenth century. Today the local economy combines woodworking, footwear manufacturing, foundries, automotive components and food production with craft traditions that have kept alive knitwear-making and, historically, candle production.
