Geography and location of Val di Non
Val di Non is located in western Trentino, nestled between Val di Sole, South Tyrol, and the Brenta Group, within the borders of the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park which defines its southern and western slopes. The district develops along the Noce stream, from which it takes its name, and includes municipalities such as Cles, Fondo, Sanzeno, and Predaia, as well as Ville d'Anaunia, Romeno, Revo, and Novella. The Mendola Pass connects it to the Adige Valley and Bolzano, while to the south it borders the Piana Rotaliana. The altitude varies from terraced valley floors to high-altitude mountain pastures, in a mosaic of orchards, woods, and pastures.
History and identity: the land of the Anauni
Cles, the valley's capital, gathers around Cles Castle and the historic center with the Palazzo Assessorile. Sanzeno houses the Basilica of the Saints Martyrs and, slightly above, the Sanctuary of San Romedio, perched on a rocky outcrop and reachable via a scenic staircase through chapels carved into the rock. In Fondo, you can breathe the atmosphere of the upper Val di Non, with its historic center and traditions linked to Carnival. Predaia, a municipality born from the merger of several villages, and Vigo di Ton with the nearby Castel Thun complete an itinerary that alternates rural villages, frescoed churches, and restored castles open for visits.
Food and local traditions
Val di Non is synonymous with apples: the Mela Val di Non DOP, among the first Italian varieties to obtain the designation, colors orchards that extend for thousands of hectares and is used in local ciders, juices, and spirits. Alongside apple trees, small fruits like raspberries and blueberries grow, while mountain pastures produce alpine cheeses and Trentingrana. Peasant cuisine offers canederli, polenta with game, carne salada, and speck, accompanied by local wines and grappas. Autumn festivals dedicated to apples and markets linked to the Sanctuary of San Romedio mark the calendar of local traditions.
