The capital of Val di Non and the Melinda apple orchards

Cles is the administrative and cultural heart of Val di Non, the broad Trentino valley stretching between the Noce and Adige rivers. The surrounding landscape is dominated by apple orchards, covering thousands of hectares and making this valley the home of the Melinda DOP apple, one of Italy's best-known fruit and vegetable brands. Walking along the country roads around Cles, visitors find themselves surrounded by neat rows of trees that burst into white and pink blossom in spring and fill with ripe fruit ready for harvest in autumn. This agricultural vocation is not just an economic matter but a matter of identity: cooperatives, cellars and producer consortiums animate the valley's social life, and numerous local events celebrate the apple's cycle every year. Cles's historic centre, with its arcaded streets and noble palaces, tells the story of a town that for centuries was a crossroads of trade and power, a reference point for the whole of Val di Non.

Lake Santa Giustina

At the foot of Cles lies Lake Santa Giustina, one of Trentino's largest artificial reservoirs, created by damming the Noce stream for hydroelectric power production. Despite its artificial origin, the lake has blended perfectly into the landscape, becoming a defining feature of Val di Non and a reference point for those seeking waterside views framed by mountains and apple orchards. Its shores, partly wooded and partly terraced with crops, offer walking and cycling paths suited to relaxing outings, while the calm waters are ideal for activities such as canoeing and rowing. In summer the reservoir becomes a destination for day trips for families and sports enthusiasts, with equipped rest areas and particularly striking photo spots at sunset. The view of the lake from Cles's viewpoints captures in a single glance the essence of the valley's landscape: water, mountains and fruit growing in balance.

Castel Cles

Overlooking the town stands Castel Cles, a manor of Renaissance layout that for centuries was the residence of the prince-bishops of Trento and a symbol of noble power over Val di Non. The structure, with its elegant lines and frescoed halls, testifies to the strategic role Cles played as a political and administrative centre of the valley in historical times. The castle stands out from other, more austere fortifications in Trentino for its refined, noble character, closer to a stately residence than a defensive structure, reflecting the prestige of the Cles family, which even gave a cardinal to the Church. Walking near the manor, partly open to visitors today, one senses the atmosphere of a history shaped by the balance between ecclesiastical power and local nobility. Castel Cles remains the town's identifying symbol and one of the main points of historical and cultural interest for anyone visiting Val di Non.

The Sanctuary of San Romedio and the Rio Sass canyons

Among the most evocative destinations near Cles is the Sanctuary of San Romedio, a religious complex perched on a rocky spur reached via a series of staircases and chapels carved into the stone. The site, wrapped in legends linked to the hermit San Romedio and a bear, is considered one of Trentino's most distinctive sanctuaries, both for its spectacular position and for the contemplative atmosphere that sets it apart. Not far away, Val di Non conceals another natural treasure: the canyons carved by the Rio Sass stream, narrow and deep gorges shaped over time by the action of water, offering trekking and canyoning routes for those who love direct contact with wild nature. These environments, rich in smoothed rocks, pools and small waterfalls, reveal a side of the valley different from the agricultural one of the orchards, wilder and more fascinating, rounding out the outdoor offerings of a territory capable of blending spirituality, history and adventure.

Fruit growing, castles and nature of the valley

Val di Non, with Cles as its natural point of reference, is a territory where fruit growing coexists harmoniously with a historical heritage made up of castles, towers and ancient villages scattered across the valley's slopes. Besides Castel Cles, numerous other fortifications dot the landscape, evidence of a past in which this valley was an important strategic crossroads between Trentino and the neighbouring regions. Framing this mosaic of history and agriculture are the mountains surrounding the valley: to the east rise the spires of the Brenta Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, while to the west the harsher peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale group can be seen. This variety of landscapes makes Val di Non an ideal destination for those seeking slow tourism, made up of walks among the apple orchards, visits to castles and sanctuaries, trips to the lake and high-altitude hikes, in a natural setting that changes colour and character with every season of the year.
