История Ponte di Piave

History and origins

Ponte di Piave's history is bound up with that of the river bearing its name, a communication route and at the same time a natural border between the Treviso area and the Veneto Orientale since medieval times. The territory, with its long agricultural vocation, went through dramatic times during the First World War, when the Piave became the front line after the retreat of Caporetto, with heavy consequences for the town and its population. Rebuilt after the war, the municipality retained its agricultural identity, enriched in more recent times by the presence of the writer Goffredo Parise, who chose to settle here in 1984 and remained until his death in 1986.

What to see, main places

The town's main point of interest is the Casa di Cultura Goffredo Parise, on Via Verdi, an old restored barn on two floors: the upper level today houses the municipal library and was previously the studio of painter Giosetta Fioroni, the writer's companion, while the lower level preserves intact the study and rooms where Parise spent his final years, with furniture, personal belongings and a contemporary art collection linked to artists of the Piazza del Popolo school in Rome, including Schifano, Fioroni, Ceroli, Ontani, Angeli and Chia. The house, founded as a cultural centre in 1987 and officially designated a Casa Museo from 2004, can be visited with a guide by appointment. The rest of the historic centre has a simple layout, typical of the farming villages along the Piave.

Nature and surroundings

The Piave river, with its embankments walkable and cyclable on both sides, is the area's main natural feature and forms part of the cycling routes that follow the river's course from the Dolomites down to the Adriatic. The surrounding countryside, planted with arable crops and vineyards, offers a plain landscape typical of the Veneto Orientale, with the coast at Jesolo and Eraclea reachable in under an hour by car for those wanting to round off the visit with a stop at the sea.

Food, wine and local produce

Ponte di Piave's agriculture produces cereals, forage crops and wine grapes, grown in the fields stretching along the river, in an area on the border between the Piave and Veneto Orientale wine denominations. Local cuisine follows the Treviso farming tradition, with dishes based on radicchio, seasonal vegetables and other produce of the land, without a single signature dish of the municipality but very much in line with the simple gastronomy of the Veneto plain.

Events and traditions

The Casa Museo Goffredo Parise is at the centre of cultural initiatives, guided tours and literary events organised by the municipal administration, which keep the writer's memory alive on a national level too. Alongside this cultural chapter, the town follows the calendar of patronal feasts and village festivals, gathering moments typical of the Treviso countryside.

How to get there and location

Ponte di Piave lies about twenty-five kilometres east of Treviso and a little over fifty from Venice, along the state road connecting the Treviso area to the Veneto Orientale and the Adriatic coast. It is comfortably reached by car; the nearest railway station is Oderzo, on the Treviso-Portogruaro line, while the reference airports are Treviso and Venice. Its position along the Piave makes it a natural stop for anyone cycling the river's dedicated cycle route.

Local life and economy

Ponte di Piave's economy remains predominantly agricultural, with a fabric of small and medium-sized farms growing cereals, forage crops and grapes. The presence of the Casa Museo Goffredo Parise has over the years added a cultural and literary tourism component, still modest but able to bring visitors specifically interested in the writer to a town otherwise oriented toward plain farming life.
