История Pederobba
History and origins
The first written records of Pederobba, Onigo and Covolo date to the early Middle Ages, and it was only after the year 1000 that the town began to be mentioned as the seat of parishes and chapels in notarial deeds. In 1152 a papal bull from Eugene III confirmed to the then bishop of Treviso the parishes of Petrarubea and San Zenone, while from 1337 to 1797 the area became part of the Republic of Venice, growing in the sixteenth century into the site of one of the region's most important markets, with the Onigo and Pisani families among the leading landowners after purchasing land sold off by Venice in 1646.
The French Military Sanctuary
Along the road between Treviso and Feltre, facing the Piave River, stands the French Military Sanctuary, inaugurated on 6 June 1937 and conceived by architect Camille Montagne as an imposing stone wall, symbolising the enemy offensive halted through the sacrifice of French soldiers. Inside lie the remains of around a thousand fallen soldiers of the French 47th Division, which operated in this area between December 1917 and November 1918 and played the lead role in the battle of 30 December 1917 to recapture Monte Tomba. The sanctuary was inaugurated together with its twin monument at Bligny, in France, which holds the remains of over three thousand Italian soldiers who fell in the same conflict.
The Piave and Monte Grappa
Pederobba's landscape is dominated by the Piave River, which marks the natural boundary of the municipal territory, and by the Monte Grappa massif rising just to the north: a landscape of great natural value, still crossed today by hiking trails that lead through woods and meadows past sites of First World War memory.
Quarries and craftsmanship
Within the municipal territory, particularly around Onigo, limestone and marble quarries are still active, historically supplying building material to the foothill area. In the post-war decades Pederobba also grew into a craft and industrial centre, with a significant footwear manufacturing sector that still characterises the local economy alongside agriculture.
Events and historical memory
Each year the French Military Sanctuary is the setting for commemorative ceremonies honouring the sacrifice of the French soldiers who fell along the Piave, keeping alive Pederobba's link to the history of the First World War, while themed trails dedicated to wartime memory cross the municipal territory.
How to get there
Pederobba lies along state road 348 between Treviso and Feltre, about thirty-five kilometres from the provincial capital, and can be reached by car or by the province's suburban buses. The nearest railway station is Montebelluna.
