История Nervesa della Battaglia

At the foot of the Montello

Nervesa della Battaglia occupies a strategic position at the foot of the Montello, the long wooded hill ridge separating the Treviso plain from the course of the Piave. The landscape alternates vineyards, coppiced woods and views over the river, crossed by cycle routes such as the Montello ridge trail, which allow the hill to be explored between nature and historical memory. Its position along the river has made this territory, across different eras, a strategically important crossing point, in peacetime as much as in war.

The Abbazia di Sant'Eustachio

The Abbazia di Sant'Eustachio was founded around 1050 by Count Rambaldo III of Collalto and his mother Gisla, on the site of an earlier fortified structure, following the pattern typical of Benedictine abbeys built on Roman-era sites. In 1552, Monsignor Giovanni della Casa retired here for an extended period, finding inspiration for some of his best known works, including the Galateo. The abbey was definitively suppressed in 1865, its abbatial title transferred to the Bishop of Treviso, and after the rout of Caporetto it found itself very close to the Piave front, suffering serious damage. Today it remains one of the most significant medieval monuments in the area.

The Ossario del Montello

At the eastern end of the Montello, at around 200 metres above sea level, stands the Ossario del Montello, overlooking a long stretch of the Piave where the Battle of the Solstice and the Battle of Vittorio Veneto were fought. Designed by the Roman architect Felice Nori, it was completed in 1935 and inaugurated on 18 June 1938 on the twentieth anniversary of the Battle of the Solstice. Inside rest the remains of nearly ten thousand soldiers, previously buried in around a hundred cemeteries scattered along the Piave front. Nearby stands a monument dedicated to Francesco Baracca, one of the most celebrated aces of Italian aviation during the Great War.

Vineyards and trails of the Montello

Beyond its wartime memory, the Montello today is a territory enjoyed for cycling and walking, with the ridge trail crossing the hill between woods and vineyards. Nervesa is part of this hilly district, where wine production sits alongside slow tourism made of scenic routes, rest stops and small farm stays immersed in greenery, a different way of getting to know a territory deeply marked by the twentieth century.
