История Gazzo

The Resurgence-Spring Area

Gazzo lies in a strip of plain where groundwater rises spontaneously to the surface, giving rise to the so-called risorgive, natural springs that feed streams and small watercourses. Among these, the Fontanon del Diavolo, located in the north-eastern part of the municipality, is one of the most striking spots, with clear water flowing year-round at a constant temperature. This hydrogeological phenomenon, typical of the Alta Padovana, has shaped local agriculture for centuries, guaranteeing irrigation even in the driest periods, and still defines the municipality's landscape today, with channels weaving between the cultivated fields.

The Territory's Historic Villas

Gazzo's civil architecture includes several villas testifying to the presence of noble Venetian families in past centuries, among them the Palladian-style Villa Tacchi, Villa Mazzon and Villa Forasacco. In addition, a Palladian-style palazzo with a colonnade and a large lawn in front was used by the British as an airfield during the First World War, a detail linking local history to wider events. These residences, while not open to the public with the same regularity as the great UNESCO villas of the Vicenza area, enrich Gazzo's townscape and are worth a stop for anyone passing through.

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore

The parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore, dating back to the 10th century, is one of the oldest religious buildings in the area, recognisable by its exposed-brick facade and Romanesque elements such as hanging arches and splayed single-light windows. Inside, the single nave leads to a semicircular apse enriched with medieval frescoes, evidence of a religious and artistic tradition rooted in a period predating even the great Veneto villas. For those interested in minor Romanesque architecture, the church is one of the most concrete reasons to visit Gazzo.

A Border History Between Vicenza and Padua

The name Gazzo likely derives from the Lombard gahagium, 'enclosed private land' or sacred wood, and the earliest written records date back to 1187, when the area was cleared of woodland under a grant from the Bishop of Vicenza. The municipality belonged to the province of Vicenza until 1853, when it was first attached to Cittadella and then definitively to Padua, an administrative shift reflecting the territory's border position, historically contested between the two cities. According to local tradition, Napoleon also visited the area in 1796 after the battles of Rovereto and Bassano, another small but notable piece of this corner of the Alta Padovana's history.

Countryside, Cycle Paths and Farming Life

Gazzo's territory offers cycle paths and trails crossing the surrounding countryside, revealing rural landscapes marked by resurgence springs and irrigation canals. It is a municipality of around four thousand residents, with an economy still tied to agriculture and small local businesses, where tourism remains a marginal part of the community's daily life. For those seeking an authentic experience of the Alta Padovana, away from the more crowded destinations, Gazzo offers a balanced mix of minor history, distinctive hydrogeology and well-preserved farmland.
