История Crespadoro

A mountain municipality among the Vicenza prealps

Crespadoro covers a largely mountainous territory, with the main village nestled in the valley floor of the Chiampo stream and numerous hamlets scattered at higher altitudes, including Contrada and the aforementioned Campodalbero. It is a municipality of a few thousand residents, whose economy is split between residual mountain farming, small-scale craftsmanship and still-strong ties to the nearby tanning district in the lower valley. The stone houses, small rural clusters and isolated hamlets reflect a settlement pattern typical of the Venetian prealps, built to withstand harsh winters and make use of high-altitude pastures in summer.

Campodalbero and views of the Piccole Dolomiti

Campodalbero, Crespadoro's highest hamlet, is the municipality's true viewpoint: on clear days it offers sweeping views of Mount Pasubio and the Piccole Dolomiti, a sight that rewards the climb through the switchback road. The hamlet is popular mainly with hikers and those seeking cool air in summer, when temperatures on the plain become oppressive. It retains a suspended, timeless atmosphere, with just a handful of houses, a mountain osteria and trails branching out toward the surrounding pastures and woods, in a setting still largely untouched by mass tourism.

Malghe, mountain cheeses and chestnuts

Crespadoro's rural tradition still lives on in its high-altitude malghe, where herds are taken up to pasture each summer and cheeses are made following methods passed down through generations. Some malghe are open to the public with simple refreshment points serving fresh dairy products and mountain dishes. Chestnut cultivation is equally important: the chestnut woods covering the municipality's slopes are still harvested each autumn, and Crespadoro's chestnuts appear at village sagre and in local kitchens. It is a modest but genuine mountain economy, one that aims not to dramatise the territory but to preserve it.

Trails and hiking in the Lessinia woods

The network of CAI trails crossing Crespadoro's territory links the valley-floor hamlets to the malghe and ridgelines marking the boundary with neighbouring municipalities, opening the way toward eastern Lessinia. These are routes suited to non-extreme hiking, often circular, alternating stretches through beech and chestnut woods with panoramic clearings. In winter, snow turns some of the higher hamlets into starting points for simple snowshoe outings. There are no proper ski lifts here: Crespadoro's vocation remains that of slow-paced hiking tourism, not equipped for mass alpine skiing.

A bridge between the industrial Chiampo valley and the mountains

Crespadoro occupies a particular position, acting as a hinge between the lower Chiampo valley, home to Vicenza's well-known tanning district, and the prealpine mountains. Many residents still work in the tanning industry of neighbouring municipalities, returning each evening to the quiet of the mountains: a common pattern of life in these valleys, where home and workplace do not coincide. For visitors, this position means being able to reach both the plain's services and the mountain trails within minutes, making Crespadoro a practical base for those who want to combine convenience and nature without giving up the calm of a small municipality.
