История Borso del Grappa
History and origins
Borso's history is tied to the Treviso countryside and, like the whole Grappa area, to the First World War: the massif was the scene of fierce fighting between 1917 and 1918, and the memory of those events remains etched into the trenches, military tunnels and memorials that dot the mountain. The village, with its agricultural roots, has retained over time a fabric of small hamlets and settlements scattered along the slope, typical of Veneto's foothill settlements.
What to see
Climbing towards the summit of Grappa, also reachable from the Borso side, one encounters trenches, tunnels and military positions from the Great War, as well as the large Military Memorial that honours the fallen of the front. In the village itself are small churches and rural settlements that speak to foothill farming life, while panoramic points along the ascent offer sweeping views over the Treviso plain.
Nature and surroundings
The municipal territory unfolds along the flank of Monte Grappa, amid woods, pastures and cliffs that make it one of Italy's best-known destinations for free flying: the Borso take-off site is used year-round by paragliders and hang-glider pilots, including for national and international competitions. Numerous hiking trails and mountain bike routes cross the mountain, linking up with the network of refuges and military roads that climb to the summit.
Food, wine and local products
The area produces wine on its lower hills and alpine dairy cheeses higher up, in a cuisine that blends Veneto foothill tradition with mountain influences: polenta, aged cheeses, cured meats and mushrooms gathered in the woods of Grappa are recurring features in the area's restaurants and farm inns.
Events and traditions
Borso hosts free-flight gatherings and competitions that draw enthusiasts from across Europe, as well as commemorative events tied to the Great War history of Grappa. Patron saint festivals and village fairs punctuate the calendar of the local hamlets, closely tied to seasonal farming life.
How to get there and location
The municipality lies in the province of Treviso, at the foot of Monte Grappa, easily reached by car from Bassano del Grappa and the Treviso plain. It has no direct rail service; the nearest station is Bassano del Grappa. One of the access roads to the summit of Grappa starts from Borso, a meeting point between the provinces of Treviso, Vicenza and Belluno.
Local life and economy
The local economy is based on agriculture, particularly hillside viticulture, livestock farming and forestry, alongside niche tourism linked to free flying and historical-naturalistic hiking on Grappa. Village life remains shaped by agricultural rhythms, with the hamlets scattered across the slope retaining a strong local identity.
