История Alonte

Villa Trevisan and its Gothic loggia

Alonte's most representative building is Villa Trevisan, recognisable above all for its sixteenth-century Gothic loggia, an architectural feature rare in the Colli Berici area and linked to the period when the Traversi family owned land here. The villa testifies to the interest that noble Vicenza and Venetian families had in these hills, used both for agricultural production and as a summer retreat away from the heat of the plain. Today the loggia remains one of the village's most photographed sights, a small piece of refined architecture within an otherwise rural, informal setting.

The Grotta dei Mulini

A short distance from the village centre lies the Grotta dei Mulini di Alonte, a natural cavity opening at the base of an imposing overhanging rock wall, close to the spring that gives it its name. It is not a cave equipped for mass tourism, but a small feature of the karst landscape that characterises the Colli Berici, appreciated above all by those who enjoy nature walks and the discovery of the territory's lesser-known corners. It is a good example of how the limestone geology of this area has shaped caves, sinkholes and springs scattered among the woods over the centuries.

The trails of the southern Colli Berici

The southern Colli Berici, of which Alonte is part, are crossed by a network of hiking trails that can be walked in every season, suitable for both experienced hikers and families looking for a simple walk. The route that runs around the village presents no particular technical difficulties and allows visitors to admire a landscape of coppice woods, terraced vineyards and small rocky outcrops typical of this hilly Vicenza area. Walking these trails is probably the best way to appreciate the variety of Alonte's territory, which alternates cultivated land with stretches of wilder nature.

Vineyards and farming life

Alonte's economy remains tied above all to agriculture and, in particular, to winemaking, with vineyards climbing the slopes of the Colli Berici and contributing to the production of the typical wines of this Vicenza area. The wine-growing vocation of the area, combined with the presence of small local wineries and producers, offers the chance to combine nature walks with food-and-wine stops, in a territory where wine is still very much part of the village's agricultural identity. It is hillside farming, less extensive than that of the plain, requiring manual labour and constant care of the terraces.

The villas of the surroundings

Alonte is conveniently placed for exploring other historic villas of the Colli Berici, such as Villa Fracanzan Piovene in Orgiano, with its monumental barchessa now home to a museum of agricultural work, or Villa Pisani Ferri, known as La Rocca, on the hill above Lonigo, recognisable from a distance by its dome. Although these buildings do not belong to the municipality of Alonte, their proximity allows visitors to build a broader itinerary discovering the noble architecture of this part of the Vicenza area, which pairs simple countryside with a villa heritage far richer than one might expect.
