История Pieve di Bono-Prezzo
Pieve di Bono-Prezzo, a Scattered Municipality in the Chiese Valley
Pieve di Bono-Prezzo became a single administrative municipality on 1 January 2016, when the former comune of Pieve di Bono - itself formed in 1928 through the consolidation of nine smaller municipalities and partly reconstituted in 1952 - merged with the neighbouring comune of Prezzo, following a referendum that recorded broad popular support in December 2014. The result is a scattered comune, that is, one without a single main town: the town hall is based in the hamlet of Creto, while the territory also includes Agrone, Cologna, Por, Prezzo and Strada, small settlements spread along the valley floor and the surrounding slopes. This polycentric structure reflects the history of the area, the Giudicarie Esteriori, once divided into autonomous communities linked by an ancient shared territorial organisation, yet always careful to preserve their own local identity, still visible today in the different bell towers, small squares and traditions of each hamlet.
The Chiese River and the Heart of the Giudicarie
The Chiese river rises from the glaciers of the Adamello massif, descends through the Val Daone and crosses the territory of Pieve di Bono-Prezzo before continuing toward Storo and Lake Idro, in Lombardy. The municipality thus occupies an almost central position along the Trentino stretch of the river, in that part of the Giudicarie known as Esteriori because it faces outward from the province, toward the Val Sabbia in the Brescia area. The valley floor, at around 500 metres above sea level, is framed by wooded slopes rising toward high-altitude pastures, while the Chiese, dammed further upstream by artificial lakes for hydroelectric production, still flows here with a lively character. This location has historically made Pieve di Bono a place of encounter between the more inland valleys, toward central Trentino, and the Brescia lands, a balance between mountain isolation and openness that still shapes the local landscape today.
The Pievi, the Churches and Castel Romano
The very name of the municipality recalls the role Pieve di Bono played in the Middle Ages, when it was one of the Seven Pievi of the Giudicarie, the ancient ecclesiastical and civil districts that jointly administered pastures, woods and common rights under the authority of the Prince-Bishopric of Trento. This tradition is still reflected today in the church of Santa Giustina in Creto, the parish seat, the church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Agrone and the church of San Giacomo Maggiore in Prezzo, the latter flanked by the Madonna delle Grazie chapel, referenced in the coat of arms of the former comune of Prezzo. On the military side of local history stands instead Castel Romano, in the hamlet of Por: a 12th-century fortress built to guard the road between the Brescia area and the Giudicarie, today a ruin but still clearly recognisable on its rocky spur. In 1439 the castle was successfully defended by the Lodron family, allies of Venice, against imperial troops, an episode testifying to the long-standing strategic role of this stronghold.
The Great War, Mountain Farmsteads and Nature
Until 1918 the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy ran just a few kilometres downstream from Pieve di Bono-Prezzo, along the Caffaro stream near Ponte Caffaro and Storo: a frontier stretch fortified since the 19th century and, when Italy entered the war in May 1915, the scene of the first troops crossing toward the lines of the Giudicarie front. The Giudicarie Esteriori, of which Pieve di Bono-Prezzo is part, thus experienced the events of the Great War at close quarters, even while remaining somewhat behind the actual combat lines. Away from the fronts, life in the territory was shaped for generations by the work of the masi, the typical rural buildings scattered across meadows and clearings where hay, tools and livestock were kept during the summer alpine pasture season. Today these masi, together with the coniferous woods and the pastures climbing toward the surrounding mountains, form a still-living agro-silvo-pastoral landscape, crossed by trails and forest roads suited to walks and hikes on foot or by mountain bike.
History and Experiences Across the Hamlets
The administrative history of this corner of the Giudicarie has been eventful: in 1928 nine small municipalities were consolidated to form Pieve di Bono, in 1952 Prezzo regained its autonomy along with other hamlets, and finally, following the referendum of December 2014, the present-day Pieve di Bono-Prezzo was born on 1 January 2016. This sequence of mergers and separations tells the story of a territory used to redrawing its own boundaries while keeping a shared valley identity. Today the local economy rests on mountain farming, livestock raising and a low-key, uncrowded form of tourism that draws its strength from the quiet of the hamlets and their proximity to the Val Daone and the Adamello Brenta Nature Park. Visiting Pieve di Bono-Prezzo therefore means moving between small villages, pieve churches, the ruins of Castel Romano and the trails along the Chiese, on an itinerary that combines the history of the Giudicarie Esteriori with the calm of the Trentino mountains.
