История Mezzocorona
The heart of the Piana Rotaliana
Mezzocorona lies in the Piana Rotaliana, also called Campo Rotaliano, the flat basin that opens north of Trento where the Adige receives the waters of the Noce stream. It is one of the two main towns of this territory, together with neighbouring Mezzolombardo, with which it shares history, agricultural economy and landscape. Its position, sheltered by the surrounding hills and crossed by the river, has for centuries made this area particularly favourable to agriculture and especially to viticulture. Easily reached from Trento via the state road and the Brenner railway line, Mezzocorona today is a reference point for anyone wanting to discover the plain, its vineyards and the mountains that frame it, combining easy access with the authenticity of a village still tied to the rhythms of the countryside and the wine-growing seasons.
Teroldego Rotaliano and viticulture
The name of Mezzocorona is closely tied to that of Teroldego Rotaliano, the native red wine born precisely in the basin between the town and Mezzolombardo. The gravelly soils deposited by the rivers and the microclimate of the plain, sheltered from the wind and well exposed to the sun, offer ideal conditions for the Teroldego vine, cultivated here for generations according to techniques passed down from family to family. Numerous wine cellars, some historic and others more recently founded, work the grapes from the surrounding vineyards and offer visit and tasting itineraries open to those who want to get to know the wine production cycle up close. Viticulture is not only an economic activity but an identity-shaping element that has moulded the landscape, the calendar of local festivals and the culinary culture of the entire Piana Rotaliana.
Monte di Mezzocorona between cable car and via ferrata
Towering over the town is the Monte di Mezzocorona, also known to locals as the Dosso, a massive limestone wall that rises sheer above the village. A cable car connects the town centre directly with the plateau above, making it possible in just a few minutes to reach a high-altitude natural environment very different from the cultivated plain below, with hiking trails and panoramic points over the Rotaliana basin and the surrounding mountains. For lovers of climbing and equipped routes, the wall hosts the spectacular via ferrata del Burrone Giovanelli, which runs along a rocky gully and is considered one of the most fascinating and popular via ferratas in Trentino, appreciated for its technical development and for the panoramas it offers during the ascent.
The historic centre: Palazzo della Vicinia and Castel San Gottardo
The historic centre of Mezzocorona preserves a compact urban layout, with lanes, frescoed houses and courtyards that tell the agricultural and administrative history of the town. Among the most significant buildings stands the Palazzo della Vicinia, which historically housed the administrative functions of the Rotaliana territory and still today represents a reference point in the urban fabric. On the crag overlooking the settlement lie instead the remains of Castel San Gottardo, an ancient fortified structure that watched over the plain below and the valley's communication routes. Walking through these places reveals the historical layering of Mezzocorona, where civic buildings, fortified traces and rural architecture coexist in a compact and well-preserved setting.
Vineyards, wine cellars and surroundings
Around Mezzocorona the landscape opens into an orderly mosaic of vine rows, orchards and small cultivated plots, typical of the basin between the Adige and the Noce. Travelling along the country roads one encounters wine cellars of various sizes, from large cooperative wineries to family-run businesses, often open for visits by appointment for tastings and direct purchases. The proximity to Mezzolombardo makes it easy to extend the itinerary through the Piana Rotaliana, while its strategic position along the Trento-Bolzano axis makes Mezzocorona a good base for exploring both the wine-growing plain and the mountains around it. It is a territory well suited to slow tourism, made up of walks among the vine rows, stops at wine cellars and the discovery of a still very authentic rural landscape.
