Calceranica al Lago, on the Shore of Lake Caldonazzo
Calceranica al Lago lies in the eastern Valsugana, in the province of Trento, on the south-western shore of Lake Caldonazzo, Trentino's largest natural lake, set among the mountains that separate the Adige valley from the Venetian plain. The municipality, one of the smallest in the area by population, is divided by the Màndola stream into two historic districts: Màndola to the west and Calceranica proper to the east, each grown around its own place of worship. Behind the village rise the green slopes of the Vigolana plateau, offering wide views over the Valsugana and the lake below, while a little further east, beyond the main town of Caldonazzo, lies the nearby Lake Levico, another historic destination of Trentino lake tourism. This position between two lakes and a mountain plateau makes Calceranica a convenient base both for lakeside holidays and for hiking at altitude.
The Lake, Swimming and Water Sports
Lake Caldonazzo has always been the heart of Calceranica's tourist appeal: the village's green shores host equipped beaches, campsites and play areas that come alive with bathers and families every summer. Its waters, among the warmest of Trentino's lakes, lend themselves to a wide range of activities: swimming, sailing, windsurfing, rowing and canoeing all find room thanks to jetties and mooring points scattered along the coast, while local sports clubs run courses and outings for beginners and experts alike. Lakeside walks, shaded picnic areas and waterfront venues round out an offer designed for a relaxed, family-friendly holiday. There is no shortage of scenic viewpoints from which to take in the whole extent of the lake, with the mountains of the Valsugana as a backdrop and, on the clearest days, the ridges that close the horizon to the north.
The Pyrite Mines and Roman Traces
Beneath the quiet surface of this lakeside village lies a surprising industrial history: sources have documented the extraction of copper and iron in Calceranica's territory since the sixteenth century, an activity that in 1929 the Montecatini company industrialised for sulphuric acid production from pyrite, with occasional traces of gold and silver, remaining active until its final closure in 1964. Today that mining season is told by the Mining Museum and by a visitable mining park, also reachable on foot along the Sentiero della Miniera trail. The Roman era, instead, is recalled by the Church of Sant'Ermete, in the Màndola district, built on an ancient pagan place of worship dedicated to the goddess Diana: inside it preserves a votive altar from the 2nd century AD dedicated to the deity, direct evidence of Roman presence on these lakeshores well before the arrival of Christianity.
The Valsugana Cycle Path and the Nature of the Vigolana
Calceranica al Lago is a natural stop on the Valsugana cycle path, the long protected route that follows the course of the Brenta river and the shores of lakes Caldonazzo and Levico, linking Trento to the Asiago plateau: cycling along the shore, riders can admire reed beds, glimpses of the lake and the profiles of the surrounding mountains, with comfortable stops in the lakeside villages. Behind the settlement, the road climbing toward the Vigolana plateau crosses broadleaf woods and pastures that shelter a fair variety of Alpine flora and fauna, offering hiking trails of varying difficulty and panoramic viewpoints over the whole Valsugana. The contrast between the mild lakeshore and the wilder slopes of the Vigolana makes the municipal territory suited both to those seeking a lazy holiday by the water and to those who prefer walks and hikes at altitude, often within the same day.
History and Experiences to Live
The documented history of Calceranica dates back at least to 1184, when the village is mentioned in a bull of Pope Lucius III; in the thirteenth century, Bavarian colonisation promoted by the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Federico Vanga, led to the settlement of new farmsteads in the area. During the First World War, in 1916, a large Austro-Hungarian naval gun, nicknamed 'Lange Georg', was positioned on the lakeshore and used to bombard the Asiago plateau. After the war the village passed to Italy; in 1928 it was merged into the municipality of Caldonazzo, before regaining autonomy in 1947 and taking its current name, with the addition 'al Lago', in 1957. Today this history of borders and labour is interwoven with a tourist offer made of swimming, water sports, visits to the mining museum, walks between the two historic churches and rides on the cycle path, in a village that manages to stay authentic even during the busiest summer months.
