In later centuries the territory was shaped by the reclamation of coastal marshland and, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, by deep industrial change: this is how Rosignano Solvay came into being, a workers' settlement built around the Solvay chemical plant, with a planned urban layout still recognisable today. Castiglioncello, meanwhile, became a renowned seaside resort as early as the nineteenth century, attracting artists and well-to-do families seeking sea air and quiet.
