История Pomarance

Introduction and location

Pomarance lies in the province of Pisa, Tuscany, along the Val di Cecina, between the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills) and the hilly hinterland separating the Tyrrhenian coast from the lands of Siena and Volterra. The municipality is large and includes several hamlets, among them Larderello, Montecerboli, Serrazzano and Micciano, scattered among oak and chestnut woods, clay badlands and valleys crossed by the Cecina river. Its position away from major tourist routes has preserved an authentic rural landscape of small stone villages, scenic roads and a pace of life still tied to the land and the seasons.

History and origins

Pomarance's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the village developed as an agricultural and administrative centre within the orbit of Volterra and, later, Florence. Over the centuries the territory was shaped by mining in the surrounding hills, rich in minerals and boric steam vents, which fostered an economy based on extraction and, later, the emerging geothermal industry. The historic centre still preserves its old urban layout, with the Palazzo Pretorio and the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista bearing witness to the village's past importance. Pomarance was also the birthplace of Renaissance painters known as 'il Pomarancio', a nickname derived directly from their hometown.

Nature and landscape

The landscape around Pomarance is dominated by the hills of the Val di Cecina, dotted with woods, olive groves and cultivated fields, and crossed by the Cecina river, along which stretches the Berignone Nature Reserve, an area of great environmental value with woodlands, trails and wildlife. Around Larderello, the landscape takes on a unique character thanks to the boric steam vents rising from the geothermal underground, which earned the area the nickname 'Valle del Diavolo' (Devil's Valley). Amid steam, industrial pipelines and wild nature, this corner of Tuscany offers an unusual landscape, suspended between the energy of the earth and the silence of the woods.

Things to do and see

Visitors to Pomarance can stroll through the historic centre, admiring the Palazzo Pretorio and the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista, before heading out to the hamlets of the wider municipality. In Larderello it is worth visiting the museum dedicated to the history of geothermal energy, which tells how underground heat has been harnessed since the nineteenth century. Not far away lie the ruins of Rocca Sillana, an ancient medieval fortress set among the woods of the Colline Metallifere, an ideal destination for scenic hikes. Nature lovers can also walk the trails of the Berignone Reserve, among woods, clay badlands and viewpoints over the Cecina valley.

Flavours and traditions

Pomarance's cuisine reflects the rural tradition of inland Tuscany, based on simple dishes and local ingredients. Extra virgin olive oil from the surrounding hills and wine produced on local farms accompany tables built around bean soups, unsalted bread, mushrooms and chestnuts gathered in the woods in autumn. Cured meats and cheeses from small farms complete a genuine gastronomic offer, often tied to village festivals and local markets that bring the hamlets to life throughout the year. Woodland products such as mushrooms and truffles are also an integral part of the area's culinary traditions.
