Introduction and location
Camporgiano lies in the province of Lucca, within the Garfagnana, the valley carved by the Serchio river that separates the Apuan Alps from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The municipal territory sits on a hilly terrace overlooking the valley, at an elevation that offers wide views of the surrounding mountains. Its position, not far from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, the area's main town, makes it a convenient base for exploring the middle and upper Serchio valley, among rural villages, historic mule tracks and small settlements that have kept their agricultural, mountain character over time.
History and origins
Like most Garfagnana settlements, Camporgiano traces its origins back to the early Middle Ages, when the Serchio valley was crossed by routes linking Tuscany and Emilia and dotted with fortified outposts defending the territory. Over the centuries the village, like the whole Garfagnana, was disputed between Lucca and other local powers of the time, later coming under the rule of the Este family, dukes of Modena, who governed the valley for a long period. Traces of this past are still visible today in the layout of the compact, hilltop historic centre and in the remains of fortified structures overlooking the village.
Nature and landscape
The landscape around Camporgiano is typical of the Garfagnana: wooded slopes covered in chestnut and beech trees, cultivated terraces, streams flowing down towards the Serchio, and, in the background, the rocky ridges of the Apuan Alps on one side and the Apennine relief on the other. This largely unspoiled mountain environment is crossed by trails and old mule tracks once used for trade and transhumance, today enjoyed by hikers and trekking enthusiasts. The cooler climate compared to the Tuscan coast and the variety of microhabitats support a remarkable richness of local flora and fauna.
Things to do and see
The historic centre of Camporgiano is best explored on foot, among alleys, stairways and stone houses climbing towards the highest point of the village, where the remains of the ancient fortified structure overlooking the valley still stand. The village churches hold works and furnishings linked to local religious tradition. From the village, trails lead towards nearby hamlets and the Serchio valley, ideal for slow tourism made of walks, views and small, little-known settlements.
Flavours and traditions
Camporgiano's cuisine reflects the rural tradition of the Garfagnana, based on simple, genuine mountain products: chestnuts and chestnut flour, spelt, potatoes grown at altitude, and porcini mushrooms gathered in the surrounding woods. Dishes such as spelt soups and chestnuts cooked in various ways accompany a cuisine that favours seasonality and local ingredients. Village festivals and farmers' markets, common throughout the valley, are the best chance to taste these products straight from local producers.
