Geography and territory
Vazzola lies on the Treviso plain between the Piave and Livenza rivers, crossed by the Monticano, a stream that has shaped the area's agricultural life and settlements. The municipality includes several hamlets scattered among cultivated fields and rows of vines, in a landscape typical of the Marca Trevigiana on the edge of the Conegliano hills.
From Friulian refugees to the Da Camino fief
Tradition traces Vazzola's origins to the 9th century, when people from Friuli fleeing barbarian invasions settled in this part of the plain. The town's name is believed to derive from the Latin "lavacium", which became "Lavazola" and finally "Vazzola". The first official document dates to 994, when Emperor Otto III granted the area to the bishop of Ceneda. The territory later became a fief of the Collalto family and then of the Da Camino family, who built a castle there, no longer standing in its original form.
Templars and Johannites on the Monticano
Between the 10th and 13th centuries the Vazzola area gained some importance for the presence of monastic-chivalric orders, particularly the Johannites and the Templars, engaged in hospitality and logistical assistance to pilgrims and travellers passing along the routes that crossed the Treviso plain.
Wine and the countryside
Vazzola's territory falls within the Prosecco DOC Treviso production area, with vineyards covering much of the municipal countryside. Viticulture coexists with other crops of the plain, in an agricultural landscape where wine has grown in both economic and visual importance in recent decades.
Rural life and community
Vazzola's hamlets retain an agricultural and residential character, with parish churches, squares and local inns that remain reference points for community life, in a social fabric still tied to the seasonal rhythms of the countryside and the grape harvest.
