A história de Saccolongo
A plain town at the edge of the Euganean Hills
Saccolongo lies in the plain that separates the city of Padua from the Euganean Hills, on flat land marked by farmland, country lanes and small settlements. The landscape lacks the volcanic relief that defines the hills a little further south, but shares their climate and visual proximity: on clear days the first Euganean rises are visible on the horizon. It is a small municipality that has seen residential building growth linked to its strategic position, becoming over the years a commuter area for people working in Padua while still keeping a farming identity in its outer zones.
The Bacchiglione river
The Bacchiglione crosses the municipal territory, providing the town's most recognisable natural feature. The river, which rises in the hills near Vicenza and later flows through Padua before reaching the Adriatic, runs here through a still rural setting, flanked by tree-lined banks and short stretches walkable or cyclable. There is no major tourist infrastructure tied to the waterway, but its presence sets the pace of the local landscape and offers a breathing space of nature in an area otherwise heavily shaped by recent residential expansion.
Proximity to Arquà Petrarca and the Euganean Hills
The main reason a visitor might include Saccolongo in an itinerary is its proximity to Arquà Petrarca, the hillside village where Francesco Petrarch spent his final years and where he is buried, today listed among Italy's most beautiful villages. From Saccolongo, other Euganean Hills towns are also within easy reach, with their thermal spas, hillside paths and views over the Veneto plain. Saccolongo therefore works well as a stopover or as a quiet, affordable base for visiting the Euganean area without staying in the pricier, busier tourist centres.
A residential town, told honestly
It should be said plainly: Saccolongo is not a tourist destination in the strict sense. It is a residential and farming town, where daily life revolves around local activities, schools, small shops and commuting to Padua for work and services. Anyone seeking a travel experience built around monuments or major events should look to the better-equipped neighbouring towns. But for those living in or staying in the area, Saccolongo offers the quality of a quiet setting, green in its farming stretches, well connected and human in scale, without the pressures typical of denser urban areas.
