The vineyard of the Serenissima

Grape growing in this area has roots going back to Roman times, when the settlement of Lison already existed and gave part of its name to the denomination, and it grew stronger in the Middle Ages thanks to Benedictine monks, who introduced more rational viticultural practices. It was during the Republic of Venice, however, that the area reached its greatest fame: Pramaggiore, together with nearby Belfiore, was known as the vineyard of the Serenissima, the zone that supplied wine to the lagoon capital. That long history can still be read in the landscape today, where rows of vines cover much of the countryside and viticulture remains the town's most defining economic activity.

The Lison-Pramaggiore DOC denomination

The Lison-Pramaggiore controlled designation of origin was officially established in 1971 with the recognition of the Lison denomination, protecting Tocai, and the Pramaggiore denomination, protecting Merlot and Cabernet, later merged into a single DOC in 1974. Today it is one of the largest wine-growing areas in the Veneto, stretching across the provinces of Venice and Pordenone, producing white and red wines appreciated both in Italy and abroad. The local wineries, many of them family-run, often offer tours and tastings, a direct way to see how the work in the vineyard rows turns into a product that carries the name of Pramaggiore well beyond the borders of the Veneto.

The Regional Wine Shop and wine fair

Pramaggiore is home to the Enoteca Regionale del Veneto, an institutional reference point for promoting and understanding the region's wines, where visitors can taste labels from several Veneto denominations in a single place. Alongside it stands an even older tradition: since 1947 the town has held its wine fair, which later became a national exhibition and national wine competition from 1961 onward. It is one of the longest-running wine events in the region, drawing producers and experts from across Italy and confirming, year after year, Pramaggiore's role as a reference point for Veneto wine.

The landscape of the Venetian plain

Beyond wine, Pramaggiore is a farming town in the eastern Venetian plain, with well-tended countryside where vineyards alternate with arable fields, drainage canals and small rural hamlets. The territory, not far from the Livenza river and within easy reach of the coast, offers a flat landscape ideal for cycling along country roads, following the so-called Strada dei Vini DOC Lison Pramaggiore, which passes wineries, village churches and views over the vine rows. It is a slow kind of tourism, tied to the products of the land rather than grand monuments, but able to offer a genuine experience of rural Veneto.

Village life

Pramaggiore remains a modestly sized town, where the local economy revolves largely around agriculture and the wine supply chain, from growing to processing to direct sales at the winery. Village life centers on the historic core and on occasions tied to the wine calendar, but it also keeps the typical traits of Veneto farming villages, with its churches, local associations and a daily rhythm marked by the seasons of the vine. For visitors, pairing a stop in Pramaggiore with a wider itinerary between Portogruaro and the Venetian coast is a good way to discover a lesser-known but genuine side of the region.
