Noale, the Tempesta family's town

Noale owes its present appearance to the Tempesta family, who during the 13th and 14th centuries turned a border settlement into a fortified stronghold, equipping it with walls, towers and a private stronghold of their own. Tempesta rule, closely tied to the political struggles between Padua and Venice, ended in the 15th century when the town passed under the Republic of Venice, which largely preserved its urban layout. This continuity allowed the historic centre to retain its medieval design almost intact: streets that follow the line of the old walls, buildings arranged along the fortified perimeter, the stronghold at the centre. The Tempesta name still accompanies the town's main monuments today, testimony to a legacy that remains the connecting thread of Noale's history.

The Rocca and its moat

The Rocca dei Tempesta is Noale's most representative monument: a fortress built by the ruling family as both a fortified residence and the seat of its power, still surrounded today by a moat that underlines its defensive character. Its walls enclosed an articulated complex, designed to withstand sieges while also displaying the Tempesta family's authority to the town. The moat, a rare feature among the towns of the Venetian mainland, remains one of the site's most evocative elements, conveying at once the idea of a fortification built to isolate and protect the seat of lordly power. Walking along its perimeter means retracing, quite literally, the boundaries of what was for centuries the stronghold of the family that shaped the town.

The towers and gates of the borgo

Access to Noale's historic centre was, and still is, marked by two surviving gate-towers: the Clock Tower and the Bell Tower. These were the main openings in the town walls, the points where the town opened outward and, at the same time, closed itself off for defence. The Clock Tower, with its dial, combined a defensive role with that of marking the community's time, while the Bell Tower signalled the key moments of town life with its bells, from assemblies to emergencies. Still perfectly recognisable within the urban fabric, the two towers make it possible to trace the line of the old walls with precision and remain the clearest way to find one's bearings between the walled centre and the rest of the town.

The square and the walled centre

Piazza XX Settembre is Noale's public heart, itself enclosed within the fortified perimeter. It is defined by the arcaded loggia along one side, a covered space that for centuries hosted trade, gatherings and the daily life of the walled town. The historic centre unfolds around the square, compact and entirely contained within the old walls, with buildings whose façades still bear the marks of different periods, from the Middle Ages through later interventions under Venetian rule. Walking through the centre's streets means moving through a space whose original form is still legible, where the arcaded square remains the natural meeting point, just as it was when the borgo lived, for defensive necessity, enclosed within its own ring of walls.

Market and medieval re-enactments

Noale has a long-standing market tradition, tied precisely to the arcaded square that has hosted it for centuries, a trading point for a farming area stretching between Padua, Treviso and Venice. This commercial vocation coexists with a strong historical identity, which the town periodically celebrates through medieval re-enactments that bring back the atmosphere of the Tempesta era: costumed processions, tournaments and themed events animate the streets of the walled centre, with the Rocca and the towers as a natural backdrop. Among these events, the Palio stands out, an occasion when the town walls and the square once again take centre stage in a display that combines historical memory with popular participation, drawing visitors from across the region.

In the heart of Veneto

Noale's position, between Padua, Treviso and Venice, makes it a convenient base for exploring the Venetian mainland without straying far from the region's main centres. The town lies in a transitional area between cultivated countryside and the first signs of the urbanisation that thickens as one approaches the lagoon, a setting that historically made Noale a strategic crossroads, still perceptible today in the network of roads connecting it to nearby towns. This central location makes it easy to combine a visit to the walled borgo with excursions to the region's art cities, while Noale retains its own character as a self-contained destination, telling a distinct chapter of Venetian history tied to the power of local lordships.

How to visit

Noale's historic centre can comfortably be explored on foot, following the line of the old walls from one tower to the other and stopping at the Rocca dei Tempesta and piazza XX Settembre. The two gate-towers mark the natural entry points to the walled borgo and offer a good starting point for getting one's bearings, while the moat around the Rocca provides scenic walks along the walls. The compact size of the centre allows the main monuments to be visited in a few hours, making Noale suitable both for a short stop as part of a wider itinerary between Padua, Treviso and Venice, and for a more leisurely visit on market days or during medieval re-enactments, when the borgo fully reveals its character.
