Villa da Porto and the Novella of Romeo and Juliet
The heart of Montorso Vicentino's identity is Villa da Porto Barbaran, the family home of writer Luigi da Porto (1485-1529). It was here, before June 1524, that Da Porto wrote the 'Historia novellamente ritrovata di due nobili amanti', dedicated to his cousin Lucina Savorgnan: the story of Romeo and Juliet, published posthumously in 1531, which through later translations eventually reached William Shakespeare. A nineteenth-century tradition holds that Da Porto took the names of the two rival castles from the fortifications of Montecchio Maggiore, visible not far from the villa. In 2024 the village celebrated the novella's 500th anniversary and the villa's 300th with dedicated events and trails, reinforcing the bond between this small Vicenza municipality and one of the world's best-known love stories.
A Landscape of Hills and Vineyards
Montorso Vicentino occupies a transitional landscape between the Vicenza plain and the first hills leading into the Chiampo valley, an area that has been devoted to viticulture for centuries. From here, Montecchio Maggiore with its famous castles and Arzignano, heart of the local tanning district, are just minutes away, along with the Gambellara Recioto hills a little further east. The village has few large accommodation options, but that is precisely what suits it to diffused tourism, relying on farm stays and small local inns, ideal for anyone building an itinerary around wine, literary history and uncrowded hill country.
Historical Origins and the Municipal Territory
The origins of Montorso Vicentino date back to the Middle Ages, when the territory formed part of the system controlling the Vicenza countryside, with fortified settlements and noble estates spread across the surrounding hills. Over the centuries the village grew up around its parish church and the main roads leading to Vicenza, keeping a simple, functional urban layout typical of foothill farming centres. Several noble Vicenza families, including the Da Porto themselves, owned land and residences in this area, drawn by the healthy hillside climate and the closeness to the city. This past as a small rural lordship can still be read today in the historic buildings scattered across the municipal territory, often little known outside the local context.
