The ninth milestone of the Via Postumia
The name of Annone Veneto tells the story of the town's origin on its own: it comes from the Latin 'ad nonum lapidem', meaning 'at the ninth milestone', a direct reference to the ancient Via Postumia, the great Roman road built in 148 BC that linked Genoa to Aquileia across the entire Po-Veneto plain. Annone therefore lay along one of the main communication routes of northern Italy in Roman times, a strategic transit point rather than a significant town in its own right. This vocation as a place of passage, on the edge of Venetian territory bordering the Treviso and Pordenone areas, characterized the municipality for centuries, up to the modern agricultural development linked to major land reclamation works.
From land reclamation to vineyards
Like much of eastern Veneto, the territory of Annone Veneto was originally marshy and subject to seasonal flooding. The major land reclamation works carried out between the 19th and 20th centuries progressively transformed this land into arable countryside, laying the foundations for the agricultural development that still characterizes the municipality today. The resulting soil, particularly rich in calcium and calcareous clay, proved over the following years to be especially suited to viticulture, making Annone, together with Pramaggiore, Santo Stino di Livenza and Portogruaro, part of the so-called 'Zona Classica' of the Lison-Pramaggiore designation, the historic and highest-quality area for wine production in this corner of Veneto.
The Lison-Pramaggiore DOC Wine Route
Today Annone Veneto is one of the reference towns on the Lison-Pramaggiore DOC Wine Route, a wine-tourism itinerary crossing eastern Veneto among historic cellars and family-run businesses. Among the wineries within the municipal territory are some that combine tastings with organic production, with growing attention to environmental sustainability in vineyard cultivation. Lison DOCG, made from the Tai grape, is among the area's leading white wines, while local wineries often also offer reds from international grape varieties grown according to Venetian tradition. This is nearby wine tourism, without the large crowds of the Prosecco areas, suited to those seeking direct contact with producers.
A farming municipality, without monumental pretensions
It is fair to state this clearly: Annone Veneto does not offer a monumental historic center or major architectural attractions. It is a municipality of about four thousand inhabitants whose identity rests on farm labor and wine production rather than on a postcard-worthy artistic heritage. Those seeking frescoed villas or churches of great value will find richer offerings in the nearby towns of the Zona Classica, such as Pramaggiore, with its churches of San Marco, San Giacomo and Santa Maria Assunta. In Annone, the main value lies in the countryside itself: in the vine rows, the wineries, and the slow rhythm of a territory still deeply tied to the land.
Between the Livenza and the Tagliamento, in eastern Veneto
Annone Veneto's position, on the edge of three provinces, also makes it a good starting point for exploring eastern Veneto as a whole: from the banks of the Livenza to the lands of the Tagliamento, passing through Portogruaro with its historic center and river mills. It is a less-trodden area than the Venetian coast or the Prosecco hills, but capable of offering a more authentic travel experience, made of small farming towns, family wineries and a network of country roads that invite a slower pace. For those staying in the area, Annone represents a quiet base for organizing day-long food-and-wine excursions.
