The panoramic village above Merano
Schenna lies on a broad, sun-drenched terrace just a few kilometres from Merano, linked to the town by a scenic road that climbs gently through vineyards and orchards. The village enjoys a privileged view over the Merano basin, the Sarntal Alps and the Texel Group massif rising behind it. This elevated position, sheltered from the wind and richly exposed to the sun, gives Schenna a particularly favourable microclimate compared with other localities in the area. The historic centre, with its traditional South Tyrolean houses, parish church and cobbled lanes, retains an intimate, authentic atmosphere far from mass tourism. Strolling through the village lanes, visitors can still sense the rural life of the past, made of farmsteads, wine cellars and small workshops, which coexists harmoniously with a carefully curated, high-quality tourist offering.
Schloss Schenna and Archduke Johann's mausoleum
Dominating the village from a rocky spur stands Schloss Schenna (Castel Scena), a fortress of medieval origin that in the 19th century was purchased and turned into a stately residence by Archduke Johann of Austria, son of Emperor Leopold II and a leading figure in Tyrolean history. The castle, still inhabited by the family's descendants, preserves furnishings, portraits and memorabilia that recount the deep bond between Schenna and the Habsburg imperial house, and it can be visited during certain periods of the year. A short distance away, amid the vineyards, stands the neo-Gothic mausoleum built in memory of Archduke Johann, a building with slender spires that ranks among the area's most significant historical monuments. Together, the castle and the mausoleum form a cultural pairing that makes Schenna an essential stop for anyone wishing to explore the Habsburg history of South Tyrol.
Orchards, vineyards and a mild climate
The Schenna area is defined by a carefully tended agricultural landscape of orderly apple orchards and terraced vineyards that stretch from the edge of the village to the foot of the mountains. The mild climate, favoured by the sunny exposure and proximity to Merano, allows the cultivation of high-quality apples and the typical grape varieties of the region, which underpin South Tyrol's renowned wine production. In spring the blossoming of the orchards creates strikingly beautiful views, while in autumn the warm colours of the leaves and the grape harvest bring the surrounding countryside to life. This landscape is not merely scenic but also tells the story of the village's historic economy, still tied to mountain agriculture today. Many local farms offer tastings and direct sales of their products, allowing visitors to discover the genuine flavours of this land up close.
The irrigation-channel paths (Waalwege) and Merano 2000
Among the most characteristic experiences in Schenna is walking along the irrigation-channel paths known as Waalwege: ancient channels once used to irrigate orchards and vineyards, now transformed into flat, scenic trails ideal for relaxing walks suitable for everyone. Following the slow-flowing water, these paths offer views over the Merano basin and reveal hidden corners of the rural landscape. For those seeking more demanding hikes, Schenna is also an excellent starting point for the Merano 2000 plateau, reachable by cable car and popular both in summer for trekking and mountain biking and in winter for skiing. Close by is also the entrance to the Texel Group Nature Park, a protected area of great natural value that preserves unspoiled alpine environments and a rich variety of flora and fauna.
Gentle tourism, wellness and the surrounding area
Schenna has established itself as a destination for gentle, wellness-oriented tourism, appreciated by those seeking rest, fresh air and a slower pace without giving up comfort and quality services. Numerous hotels and farm-stays in the area offer relaxation programmes, Kneipp therapy paths and wellness centres that make the most of the favourable climate and the tranquillity of the surrounding landscape. The proximity to Merano, reachable within minutes, allows visitors to alternate the village's peace with the town's cultural and spa offerings, from the Merano Thermal Baths to the famous Tappeiner promenade. In the surrounding area it is also possible to explore other villages of the basin and the trails climbing towards the Texel Group, in a setting where nature, Habsburg history and South Tyrolean hospitality intertwine harmoniously, making Schenna an ideal base for stays that combine relaxation with the discovery of the territory.
