The Val di Peio within Stelvio National Park

The Val di Peio is a side valley of the Val di Sole that reaches into the Trentino sector of Stelvio National Park, one of the largest and highest protected areas in Europe. The park safeguards a high-altitude environment dominated by the Ortles-Cevedale massif, with perennial glaciers, rock walls and alpine wildlife including ibex, chamois and golden eagles. Cogolo di Peio, the valley's main village, serves as a natural gateway to the park, with marked trails climbing toward mountain huts and high pastures. The combination of coniferous forests, glacial streams and upland meadows makes the Val di Peio a favoured destination for summer hiking and nature watching, while preserving its identity rooted in alpine rural tradition.

The Terme di Peio (Fonti di Pejo)

The Terme di Peio, located in the hamlet of Peio Fonti, are among the highest thermal spas in Europe and draw on iron-arsenical mineral waters known since the nineteenth century for their curative properties, once frequented even by Habsburg aristocracy. The Fonti di Pejo springs supply a modern thermal centre offering drinking cures, wellness circuits and dermatological and respiratory treatments, drawing on the purity of the spring water and the high elevation of the surrounding environment. The spa complex sits within a natural setting of woods and streams, making a stay a psychophysical regenerating experience as well as a therapeutic one. For over a century the Terme di Peio have been one of the driving forces of tourism in the valley, complementing the hiking and skiing offerings of the wider territory.

Skiing at Pejo 3000 and the Ortles-Cevedale glaciers

The Pejo 3000 ski area connects Peio Fonti to slopes reaching close to three thousand metres, at the foot of the glaciers of the Ortles-Cevedale massif. The lift network offers runs for skiers of different levels, combined with panoramas spanning the park's glaciated peaks, among the highest in the entire eastern Alpine arc. Proximity to the glaciers also makes Pejo 3000 a starting point for ski mountaineering and guided glaciological excursions, while in summer the same lifts open access to high-altitude hiking routes. The bond between the ski area and the surrounding glacial environment is part of the valley's tourist identity, which in recent decades has invested in lift sustainability and protection of the high-mountain ecosystem.

The Great War on the glaciers: the White Soldier

During the First World War the Val di Peio lay close to the alpine front dividing the Kingdom of Italy from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, fought between trenches dug into the ice and outposts at extreme altitudes on the Ortles-Cevedale massif. Decades after the conflict ended, the retreat of the glaciers brought to light the remains of a soldier, who became known as the "White Soldier," perfectly preserved by the ice together with his military equipment. The discovery renewed attention on the so-called White War, fought in extreme climatic conditions above three thousand metres. Today a museum dedicated to the Great War tells this story through artefacts, photographs and reconstructions, offering visitors a way of reading the Val di Peio landscape that is not only natural but also tied to twentieth-century historical memory.

Villages, hiking and nature between Cogolo and Peio Fonti

The municipality of Peio is made up of several settlements, including Cogolo, Peio Paese and Peio Fonti, each with its own character ranging from rural Trentino architecture to tourist services linked to the spa and skiing. A dense network of trails connects the villages to larch and fir woods, high-altitude alpine huts and mountain refuges overlooking Stelvio National Park, offering routes suited to both families and experienced hikers. In summer the valley offers walks toward alpine lakes and minor glaciers, while in winter the same routes turn into cross-country ski trails and snowshoe paths. The variety of landscapes, from pastures to the rock walls of the Cevedale, makes the Val di Peio a destination able to combine slow tourism, thermal wellbeing and mountain sports in every season.
