A história de Nomi

A village in the heart of the Vallagarina

Nomi lies in the valley floor of the Vallagarina, the long valley carved by the Adige River between Trento and Rovereto, favourably positioned close to Villa Lagarina, Pomarolo, Aldeno and Calliano. The village retains the character of a small rural centre, with houses clustered around the historic core and farmland stretching towards the first hillside slopes. Its location along the valley's traditional transit routes made it for centuries a place of passage between the Lagarina communities.

History and origins

Like many centres of the Vallagarina, Nomi has its roots in agricultural settlements that developed along the Adige, in a territory long contested and crossed by armies, merchants and pilgrims heading towards southern Trentino. Local history is tied to the wider story of the valley, marked by shifting dominions and belonging first to the Prince-Bishopric of Trento and later to the Habsburg Empire. The traditional agrarian landscape, made of cultivated fields and small hamlets, still reflects this history of hardworking rural communities.

Nature and landscape between the Adige and the hills

Nomi's territory is defined by the contrast between the flat valley floor, crossed by the Adige River, and the hills rising to the east, covered with terraced vineyards and coppice woodland. This mosaic landscape, typical of the Vallagarina, alternates rows of vines, apple orchards and small cultivated plots, offering quiet views that change with the seasons. The proximity to the river also brings moments of freshness and biodiversity, with banks and floodplains hosting wildlife typical of alpine river environments.

What to do: walks and wine tourism

Nomi is well suited to relaxed walks among the vineyards and country lanes connecting the village to nearby Vallagarina centres, with the chance to continue along the Adige cycle path that runs the length of the valley. Wine tourism enthusiasts can visit local cellars to get a close look at the area's winemaking, while those seeking wider views can head up towards the surrounding hills. The village's tranquillity also makes it suitable for those who simply want to slow down, immersed in the Trentino countryside.

Local flavours and traditions

The cuisine and produce of Nomi reflect the agricultural vocation of the Vallagarina, an area historically devoted to growing grapevines and apple trees. Marzemino, the native grape variety that made the valley famous, pairs well with mountain-pasture cheeses, Trentino cured meats and simple traditional farmhouse dishes such as polenta and canederli. Lagarina apples and seasonal fruit round out a genuine gastronomic offering, often linked directly to the area's small family farms.

Not to be missed

  • A walk along the Adige cycle path
  • A visit to a local winery to taste Marzemino
  • A hike among the terraced vineyards of the surrounding hills
  • Discovering the village's historic core
  • A tasty stop for typical Vallagarina products
