Isera in the Vallagarina, on the Right Bank of the Adige

Isera lies in the Vallagarina, the valley carved by the Adige river between Trento and Rovereto, set on the right bank of the river atop a ridge of morainic origin that overlooks the valley floor. Besides the main town, the municipal territory includes eight hamlets - Cornalè, Marano, Reviano, Folaso, Casette, Bordala, Patone and Lenzima - small rural settlements scattered among vineyards and woods, each with its own identity and churches. It borders the municipalities of Mori, Nogaredo, Ronzo-Chienis, Rovereto and Villa Lagarina, a position that places it at the heart of the Vallagarina, just minutes from Rovereto and easily reached from both Trento and Lake Garda via the Brenner motorway. The landscape is typical of the lower Vallagarina: neat rows of vines climbing the morainic ridge, interspersed with small woods and farmhouses, with views stretching from the valley floor to the mountains enclosing the valley on both sides.

The Marzemino of Isera, Mozart's Wine

Isera is the home par excellence of Marzemino, the indigenous red grape variety that finds one of its finest terroirs here, on the south-facing morainic ridge: the variety grown in the town is in fact called Marzemino Gentile. The wine owes its international fame to a line in the libretto of Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte's Don Giovanni, in the final banquet scene, where the protagonist exclaims 'Pour the wine! Excellent Marzemino!': a tribute that has made the name of Isera known well beyond the borders of Trentino. Because of this deep-rooted link, the municipality holds the title of Città del Vino, Wine City. The Marzemino of Isera is an intensely coloured red, with a fruity and slightly herbaceous bouquet and a lively acidity that suits it to being drunk young or, in its more structured versions, to brief ageing. The hills around the town are dotted with small, often family-run wineries, many open for visits and tastings, that keep alive the winemaking tradition of the Vallagarina.

The Casa del Vino della Vallagarina and the Postcard Museum

In the heart of Isera's historic centre, in a nineteenth-century palazzo that once belonged to the de Probitzer family, stands the Casa del Vino della Vallagarina, a venue that combines a wine shop, restaurant and wine resort: here visitors can taste Marzemino and the other labels of the territory, paired with Trentino cuisine, in a setting that preserves the memory of the local winemaking tradition. A short distance away, within the Municipal Library, lies another cultural surprise of the town: the Postcard Museum, founded in the 1980s on the initiative of collector Carmelo Nuvoli and dedicated to him in memory of his father Salvatore. The collection numbers over 35,000 postcards, published from 1869 to the present and divided into nineteen thematic categories, together with specialist volumes and antique prints: an archive that allows visitors to retrace, through this pioneering means of communication, over a century of the history of Trentino, Italy and Europe.

Monte Zugna, the Lavini di Marco and the Vallagarina Landscape

The landscape surrounding Isera tells the story of the geographic variety of the Vallagarina. Behind the main town, toward the hamlet of Lenzima, the ground rises to about 850 metres, where a rocky spur holds the panoramic ruin of Castel Corno, a privileged vantage point over the valley and the vineyards below. Looking south, beyond Rovereto, the bulk of Monte Zugna stands out, at whose foot lies the famous Lavini di Marco biotope, within the territory of the municipality of Rovereto: an area of prehistoric landslide where about a hundred dinosaur footprints are imprinted in the limestone rock, dating back some two hundred million years, when Trentino was still a seabed. On the opposite side of the valley, to the west, the slopes of the Altopiano di Brentonico and Monte Baldo can be seen, separating the Vallagarina from Lake Garda. Within this amphitheatre of mountains, the territory of Isera occupies the middle band, where the vine-covered morainic ridge acts as a hinge between the valley floor and the mountains.

History and Experiences among Vineyards and Castles

The history of Isera has its roots in Roman times, as shown by the remains of a villa from the Augustan age, equipped with a sophisticated heating system, discovered after the Second World War within the municipal territory. In the Middle Ages the town was shaped by the presence of Castel Corno, built around the year 1000 and belonging first to the Castelcorno family, then to the Castelbarco in the eighteenth century and finally to the Liechtenstein from the sixteenth century, before becoming the property of the municipality of Isera in 1928 and being restored and opened to the public. Among the religious monuments, the church of San Vincenzo stands out, dating back to 1183, together with several chapels scattered across the eight hamlets. Today this historic heritage coexists with a lively rural economy made up of wineries, farms and small hospitality businesses: the same paths that once linked villages and fortifications have become routes for walks and cycling excursions, often themed around food and wine, combining a visit to Castel Corno or the Casa del Vino with stops at wineries and walks among the vine rows.
