A história de Campo Tures
The heart of the Valle di Tures
Campo Tures is the main village of the Valle di Tures, one of the two valleys that make up the Valli di Tures e Aurina, at the northernmost edge of South Tyrol. The historic centre stretches along Via Municipio, with traditional South Tyrolean houses, shops and cafés that bring life to the village every day. Its strategic position, right at the entrance to the Valle Aurina, has long made Campo Tures a reference point for travellers heading into the high mountains, as well as a hub for markets and services for the whole valley. Strolling through its streets you can still feel the atmosphere of a typical alpine village, with the parish church and traditional wood-and-stone architecture existing alongside a well-organised tourist offer of hotels, traditional restaurants and activities for families, hikers and winter sports enthusiasts.
Castello di Tures (Burg Taufers)
Above the village stands the Castello di Tures (Burg Taufers), one of the most imposing and best-preserved castles in South Tyrol. The medieval fortress dominates the valley from a rocky spur and can be visited with guided tours that lead through courtyards, armouries and noble chambers. Particularly striking are the frescoed halls, evidence of the castle's historic importance as a seat of power controlling the route linking the valley to neighbouring territories. The visit reveals period furnishings, weapon collections and the internal chapel, offering a complete picture of life in the manor over the centuries. From the castle the view sweeps across the entire Valle di Tures, making the visit as much a cultural experience as a panoramic one, among the most complete in the whole of South Tyrol.
Cascate di Riva (Reinbachfälle) waterfalls
A few kilometres from the centre of Campo Tures, in the hamlet of Riva di Tures, lie the famous Cascate di Riva (Reinbachfälle), three waterfalls that follow one another in a fascinating wooded setting. The hiking trail connecting them, known as the Franziskusweg, is accessible on foot and allows visitors to admire up close the power of the water cascading among the rocks, with panoramic viewpoints and bridges crossing the stream. The path, also suitable for families with children, winds through lush vegetation and offers shaded stops ideal in the summer months. The Cascate di Riva are one of the most photographed natural attractions in the Valle di Tures and an unmissable excursion for anyone visiting the area, easily reached even on a half-day trip from Campo Tures.
Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park
The territory of Campo Tures borders the Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries-Aurina, one of the largest and wildest protected areas in South Tyrol. The park safeguards glaciers, peaks over three thousand metres high, unspoiled alpine lakes and a network of trails crossing conifer forests, high-altitude pastures and high-mountain environments. It is home to wildlife species typical of the Alps, such as chamois, ibex and numerous birds of prey, and is a destination for hikers and mountaineers seeking still-untouched landscapes. Numerous mountain huts dot the park's trails, offering rest and overnight stops for those tackling the longer routes towards the summits. Campo Tures's proximity to this protected area makes the village an ideal base for multi-day excursions into the heart of the Alpi Aurine.
Skiing, hiking and valley life
Campo Tures is also an important reference point for winter sports thanks to the Speikboden ski area, which offers slopes for skiers of all levels, along with modern lifts and dedicated off-piste zones for more experienced enthusiasts. In summer the same area transforms, with the cable car carrying hikers up to tackle panoramic trails and mountain-bike routes. Down in the valley floor, village life revolves around the farming and craft traditions of the Valle di Tures, with events tied to mountain agriculture and typical South Tyrolean cuisine. The combination of sporting activities, protected nature and historical heritage makes Campo Tures a well-rounded destination in every season of the year, able to satisfy both those seeking adventure and those who simply wish to immerse themselves in the quiet of the mountains.
