The Alpe di Siusi, known in German as Seiser Alm, is the largest high-altitude alpine meadow in Europe: a sweeping expanse of green pastures stretching between 1,700 and 2,100 metres above sea level in the heart of South Tyrol. Straddling the municipalities of Castelrotto and Fiè allo Sciliar, the plateau offers a unique scenery where gentle grazing land meets the vertical walls of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a beloved destination in every season, blending quiet natural beauty with a well-organised tourist infrastructure.
Sciliar, Sassolungo and the endless meadows
The skyline of the Alpe di Siusi is dominated by the massive bulk of the Sciliar, one of South Tyrol's iconic mountains, and by the slender spires of the Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, which rise on the horizon like rocky sentinels. The entire plateau lies within the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park, established to protect this fragile landscape of peat bogs, larch woods and rolling grassland. In summer the meadows burst into alpine wildflowers, while in winter snow transforms the same expanse into a pristine tableland perfect for cross-country skiing.
How to get there and the views that unfold
To preserve its natural balance, the Alpe di Siusi is largely closed to private traffic during the high season: access is provided by cable cars from Siusi and Ortisei, or by dedicated shuttle buses, reducing the environmental impact on the plateau. This choice has turned the area into one of the most spectacular panoramic balconies in the Dolomites, where the eye can wander freely from the meadows to the surrounding rock walls. Those who reach the higher elevations are rewarded with views that take in the Sciliar, the Sassolungo and, on clear days, the more distant peaks of the Dolomite range.
Hiking, cross-country skiing and mountain-hut life
The plateau is a paradise for walkers: a dense network of well-marked trails links mountain huts, alpine dairies and scenic viewpoints, suitable for families and experienced hikers alike. In winter the Alpe di Siusi becomes one of Europe's most renowned centres for cross-country skiing, thanks to trails that wind across the snow-covered meadows, while alpine skiers find downhill slopes nearby connected to the Val Gardena. The mountain huts scattered across the plateau, mostly open in summer, are unmissable stops for a break between one trail and the next.
Flavours and traditions of the alpine dairies
Alpine dairy culture lies at the authentic heart of the Alpe di Siusi: here livestock is still driven up to pasture each summer following an age-old transhumance tradition, and dairy farmers produce cheese, butter and other dairy products using traditional methods. In the huts and dairies visitors can sample canederli dumplings, speck, apple strudel and barley soup, often accompanied by a view worth as much as the dish itself. This blend of rustic gastronomy and majestic scenery makes every stop on the plateau an experience that unites South Tyrolean tradition with natural beauty.
