Introduction and location
Seravezza lies in the province of Lucca, in the heart of Versilia, at the foot of the Apuan Alps. The town grew up at the meeting point of two small streams, the Serra and the Vezza, which together gave it its name. Surrounded by mountains rich in white marble, the municipality includes the main town and several hillside hamlets, among them Pozzi and Ripa. Its position between the Versilia coastline and the marble quarries of the interior makes Seravezza a natural crossing point between sea and mountain, where the landscape shifts quickly from coastal to alpine.
History and origins
Seravezza's connection with marble dates back to the Renaissance, when the Medici family, and Cosimo I in particular, promoted new quarries on Monte Altissimo to make Tuscany independent from the quarries of Carrara. It was during this period that Michelangelo Buonarroti travelled here in person to select blocks of stone for his Florentine commissions. As a symbol of this bond with the grand-ducal family, the historic centre still preserves the Palazzo Mediceo, built as a residence and administrative seat for overseeing local quarrying activity, a visible legacy of that era to this day.
Nature and landscape
The municipal territory stretches from the valley floor up to the higher elevations of the Apuan Alps, partly falling within the Regional Park of the Apuan Alps. Monte Altissimo, its flanks marked by marble quarries, dominates the landscape alongside chestnut and beech woods that give way to high-altitude pastures. The two streams that lend the town its name flow through narrow valleys, offering nature trails suited to walking and hiking. The mix of white rock, green woodland and clear skies makes this Apuan corner especially striking in every season of the year.

Seravezza's cuisine reflects the meeting of mountain and coast typical of Versilia. Among the most common products are chestnuts from the Apuan woods, porcini mushrooms gathered in autumn, and extra virgin olive oil from the surrounding hills. Local restaurants and village festivals serve simple dishes rooted in peasant tradition, often based on chestnut flour, seasonal vegetables and pulses. There are also echoes of the nearby seafood cuisine of the Versilia coast, which rounds out the menu with fresh fish and starters based on local catch, in a steady balance between mountain and sea.
