Introduction and location
Lucignano stands on a hilltop in the Valdichiana area of the Arezzo province, in southern Tuscany, not far from the border with Umbria. Surrounded by the rolling countryside typical of the region, with vineyards, olive groves and cultivated fields, the town enjoys a scenic position between the Valdichiana plain and the surrounding hills. Since the Middle Ages this location made Lucignano an important agricultural and trading centre. Today the village still preserves the compact, fortified appearance typical of Tuscan hill towns, with its historic centre entirely enclosed within the old town walls.
History and origins
The origins of Lucignano date back to Etruscan-Roman times, but the village took on its present form mainly during the Middle Ages, when it was contested by Siena, Arezzo and Florence because of its strategic position along the routes crossing the Valdichiana. Later ruled by the Republic of Siena and then by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the town preserved over the centuries the fortified urban layout that still characterises it today. This layered history left its mark on the public buildings, churches and walls, bearing witness to a past spent on the border between Tuscany's major powers.
Nature and landscape
The countryside around Lucignano lies within the Valdichiana, once a marshland reclaimed over the centuries and now one of Tuscany's most fertile agricultural areas, covered with cultivated fields, vineyards and olive groves rolling gently across the hills. From the hilltop historic centre, the view stretches over the surrounding countryside, with neat rows of vines and farmhouses scattered among the green fields. The area is also known for raising Chianina cattle, a breed native to this very valley. Walking along the country roads around Lucignano reveals an authentic agricultural landscape, far from the main tourist routes.

Lucignano's cuisine has its roots in the rural traditions of the Valdichiana, built around Chianina beef, extra virgin olive oil and local wine, served alongside Tuscan bread and legumes. One of the events most cherished by residents is the Maggiolata Lucignanese, a biennial festival in which the town's districts compete with floats and displays made entirely of flowers. Seasonal fairs and markets tied to the produce of the surrounding fields keep alive the bond between the village and its agricultural land.
