Introduction and Location
Crespina Lorenzana lies in the province of Pisa, in Tuscany, among the gentle hills that separate the Arno valley from the Livorno coastline. The municipality was formed in 2014 through the merger of the two ancient towns of Crespina and Lorenzana, each of which still preserves its own distinct village identity. Its hilltop position, a short distance from both Pisa and the Tyrrhenian shore, makes it a convenient base for exploring both the agricultural hinterland and the coast, while staying away from the main tourist flows and keeping a calm, rural pace of life.
History and Origins
The origins of Crespina and Lorenzana date back to the medieval period, when both villages belonged to the Pisan countryside and later came under the influence of Florence and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Thanks to their healthy climate and scenic hilltop position, the hills around Crespina became, over the centuries, a favored retreat for noble Pisan families, who built villas and country residences here. In 2014 the two historic municipalities chose to merge administratively, giving rise to today's Crespina Lorenzana, while each still preserves its own historic center and local traditions.
Nature and Landscape
The landscape of Crespina Lorenzana is typical of the Pisan hills: gentle slopes covered with olive groves and vineyards, interspersed with woodland, cypress-lined lanes and country roads winding between one farmhouse and the next. On clear days, from the highest points of the territory the view can stretch as far as the Livorno coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea, with Pisa and the Apuan Alps in the background.
