Cavriglia lies in the Arezzo section of the Valdarno, among the gentle hills that divide the Arno plain from the Chianti highlands. The municipality includes the main town and several hamlets, among them Meleto Valdarno and San Cipriano, set within a rural landscape of olive groves, vineyards and woodland. Its position, within easy reach of both Florence and Arezzo, makes Cavriglia a convenient base for exploring central Tuscany while offering a quieter, less touristy atmosphere than the region's better-known destinations, without losing a strong sense of local history and landscape identity.
History and Origins
Cavriglia's origins go back to the Middle Ages, when the borough and the scattered castles of the area were caught up in the long rivalry between Florence and Arezzo for control of the Valdarno. The twentieth century reshaped local life dramatically: the opening of large lignite mines transformed both economy and landscape, bringing industry and jobs but also the disappearance of entire settlements, relocated to make way for open-pit extraction. The territory also holds the painful memory of the Nazi massacres of summer 1944, a chapter of history that the community still honours today through commemorations and memorial sites.

What makes Cavriglia distinctive is the relationship between its mining past and natural rebirth: the land once occupied by open-pit mines has been reclaimed through reforestation and now forms extensive woodland, dotted with small lakes created when former quarries filled with water. These woods are home to a large population of fallow deer, which over the years has become one of the area's most recognisable features, alongside roe deer and other wildlife. Flavours and Traditions
Cavriglia's food follows Tuscan country tradition, built on simple dishes and local ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, wine from the surrounding hills, unsalted bread, pulses and meats cooked over embers or slow-braised. In autumn, chestnuts and porcini mushrooms enrich the table, while the village festivals held throughout the area remain the best chance to try traditional dishes made from recipes passed down through families. Because the area borders land well suited to viticulture, many local farms produce quality wine and oil, often open for tastings directly at the cellar or the olive mill.
