Introduction and location
Bibbiena lies in the Casentino, the upper valley of the Arno river stretching at the foot of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, in the province of Arezzo. The town sits on a hill offering wide views over the valley, at a natural crossroads of routes linking Arezzo to the Casentino mountains. Thanks to its central position, Bibbiena has for centuries served as a reference point for neighboring villages, remaining a small hub of services set within a still deeply rural and wooded hillside landscape.
History and origins
Bibbiena's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the settlement developed as a fortified center contested by local families and powers before coming under Florentine influence. The old town still preserves the narrow, vertical layout typical of hillside settlements of that period, with alleys, stairways and stone buildings. Bibbiena was the birthplace of Bernardo Dovizi, a Renaissance cardinal and man of letters, whose legacy remains tied to the town's cultural history through the family building at the heart of the old center.
Nature and landscape
Bibbiena's territory is shaped by the Arno river, which flows through its first stretches in the Casentino before descending toward Arezzo and Florence, and by a landscape of cultivated hills fading into the denser Apennine woods. Not far away lies the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park, a destination for hikes through centuries-old beech forests and mountain trails.
