Pilaia stretches across the first slopes of Mount Chortiatis, south-east of central Thessaloniki, in a position slightly raised above the coastal plain on which the city lies. This location gives it a character distinct from the lowland districts: streets that climb gently, natural terraces and an urban fabric that has developed following the contour lines of the terrain. Administratively, Pilaia belongs to the municipality of Pilaia-Chortiatis, the result of merging the coastal-hillside suburb with the more isolated mountain village of Chortiatis.
