At the foot of Monte Lozzo
Lozzo Atestino stretches out at the foot of Monte Lozzo, one of the volcanic hills forming the Regional Park of the Colli Euganei, just a few kilometres from the border with the province of Vicenza. The town has around 3,000 residents and grew within a distinctive landscape, where volcanic hills alternate with valleys planted with vineyards, creating a balance that sets this corner of the Padua area apart from the surrounding plain. Its position along the border between the Padua and Vicenza territories made it a place of strategic control since the Middle Ages, a role that explains the presence of one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Euganean Hills.
Castello di Valbona, a 13th-century sentinel
The Castello di Valbona is the true symbol of Lozzo Atestino: a medieval fortification dating from 1228, with a rectangular plan of 40 metres on the long sides and 25 on the short sides, and stone and exposed-brick walls over a metre thick. It was built during a period marked by wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines, in a strategic position along the border of the Padua and Vicenza territories, to control the surrounding countryside and the waterways between Este and Noventa Vicentina. From the 11th century onwards, Lozzo became a stronghold of the Paduan defensive system, of which the castle remains the most eloquent witness today, perfectly preserved in its 14th-century form.
From fortress to cultural venue
After centuries of turbulent history, the Castello di Valbona passed through various phases before becoming, in recent times, home to a renowned restaurant. Reacquired by its ancient feudal lords in 2021, the building has been fully restored and dedicated to museum, congress and hospitality use, now offering visitors the chance to admire its original structure up close, among towers, courtyards and carefully recovered interiors. This shift from military fortress to cultural venue reflects well the evolution of Lozzo Atestino, a town that has managed to preserve and enhance its historical memory without betraying its architectural authenticity.
The Euganean Hills: nature and wine
Lozzo Atestino's territory is an integral part of the Regional Park of the Colli Euganei, a volcanic area unique within the Veneto plain, rich in hiking trails suited to trekking, walking and mountain biking. From Monte Lozzo, paths lead towards the nearby Buso dei Briganti and Monte Venda, through woods, vineyards and views over the surrounding countryside. The hills also host a solid winemaking tradition, with local cellars producing Colli Euganei DOC wines, while the Euganean Thermal Baths of Abano and Montegrotto, a short distance away, round out a tourist offer combining wellness, nature and gastronomy in a landscape of great value.
A living town between past and present
Beyond the castle, Lozzo Atestino remains a modestly sized town, where daily life intertwines with the tourism linked to the Euganean Hills, without losing its character as a farming and hillside community. The centre retains a layout typical of Padua-area villages, with small shops and farms coexisting alongside a growing but still manageable flow of visitors, far from the crowds of other, better-known Euganean destinations.
