La historia de Lonigo
Villa Pisani at Bagnolo, Palladio's early masterwork
In the hamlet of Bagnolo, a few kilometres from the town centre, stands Villa Pisani Ferri, one of Andrea Palladio's earliest major commissions (around 1542), built for the noble Pisani family as the hub of a farming estate on the banks of the Guà river. Unlike the more celebrated villas of the Brenta Riviera, the layout here is more sober and functional, with the working farm wings (barchesse) still legible in their original purpose. It is a good starting point for understanding how Palladio developed, experiment after experiment, the architectural language that would later make him famous across Europe. The villa can be visited, though opening times are limited and often tied to guided tours or events, so it is worth checking locally before planning a visit.
Rocca Pisana, Scamozzi's hilltop masterpiece
Not far away, on a hill overlooking the valley, stands the Rocca Pisana, built by Vincenzo Scamozzi between 1576 and 1578 as a ceremonial villa for the Pisani family. It is considered one of the Vicenza-born architect's most refined works, inspired by the central plan of Palladio's Villa Rotonda but with its own solutions: a central dome, a circular portico, and a carefully studied relationship between the building and the surrounding landscape, designed to be admired from every angle of the hill. The park around it offers one of the widest views over southern Vicenza province, stretching from the Colli Berici hills to the plain toward Verona. Visits here are also regulated and often require booking in advance.
The thermal baths of Lonigo and its tradition of waters
On the edge of the municipal territory lies Lonigo's thermal spa complex, fed by hot springs known since the nineteenth century and used for wellness and rehabilitation treatments. It does not have the international fame of the nearby Euganean spas of Abano and Montegrotto, but that keeps it quieter, attracting visitors looking for a relaxed stay away from the crowds of the larger spa towns. It pairs well with a visit to the villas, offering a good place to unwind after a day spent walking between the old town and the hills.
The old town and Piazza Zanella
The heart of Lonigo unfolds around Piazza Zanella and the arcaded streets of the centre, with buildings that reflect centuries as an administrative and commercial hub for the whole southern Vicenza area. The Duomo, dedicated to Saint George the Martyr, holds paintings from the Veneto school within an eighteenth-century structure that replaced an older church. Walking through the streets, visitors come across noble palazzi, some with frescoed façades, evidence of a community that over the centuries attracted Venetian patrician families in search of farmland and summer villas. It is not a monumental centre on the scale of Vicenza or Verona, but it has a human scale and the genuine feel of a provincial town.
The Palio dei Dieci Comuni
Lonigo leads a historical re-enactment involving ten towns of the lower Vicenza plain, united in medieval times under the same jurisdiction. The Palio dei Dieci Comuni usually takes place in autumn, with costumed processions, contests between the different districts, and days of festivities that bring the old town to life. It is a strongly local event, but it gives visitors who happen to be in Lonigo at that time a chance to see the town in a livelier, more communal light, with stalls, music and a traditional horse race that recalls the area's long history as a market and fair town.
Among the vineyards of the Colli Berici and local produce
Lonigo's territory borders the first hills of the Colli Berici, a wine-growing area producing DOC wines such as Tai Rosso, Cabernet and Garganega, often served in local trattorias alongside traditional Veneto farmhouse dishes: salt cod, seasonal risottos, mountain-pasture cheeses and the well-known Prosciutto Veneto Berico-Euganeo DOP, closely tied to this stretch of hills. Visitors looking for a food and wine experience without the hype of the bigger tourist circuits will find family-run wineries and farm stays happy to talk about the area in a straightforward way, often pairing a tasting with a walk among the rows of vines overlooking Lonigo and the plain.
