La historia de Cordignano
A territory between plain and plateau
The municipality of Cordignano has an unusual geography for the Treviso plain: its territory rises from around twenty-five metres above sea level in the countryside to over a thousand metres, taking in part of the Cansiglio plateau. It borders the province of Pordenone, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, to the east, and lies a short distance from Vittorio Veneto and Sacile, two reference towns for the foothill area. This border position has, over its history, made the village a transit point between the Veneto plain and the valleys of western Friuli.
The countryside and rural farmsteads
The flatter part of the municipality preserves an agricultural landscape typical of the Marca Trevigiana, made up of cultivated fields, tree rows and farmstead courts that bear witness to a rural economy still present today. The main town and the surrounding hamlets grew up around farming activities, with the production of cereals and fodder crops accompanied, in recent decades, by viticulture that forms part of the wider wine-growing area on the left bank of the Piave.
The Cansiglio, forest of the Serenissima
Part of the municipal territory climbs up to the Cansiglio plateau, a vast beech forest shared with the provinces of Belluno and Pordenone, which for centuries was managed directly by the Republic of Venice as a timber reserve for its Arsenal shipyard. Today the Cansiglio is a protected natural area and a hiking destination, with woods, sinkholes and high-altitude pastures offering an environment completely different from the plain below, reachable in a short time from the main town.
Village life and proximity to Vittorio Veneto
With around seven thousand inhabitants, Cordignano keeps a village pace of life, tied to the farming seasons and to the craft and commercial activities that developed along its main roads. Its proximity to Vittorio Veneto, an art town with a notable historic centre and important memories of the First World War, allows visitors to combine a stop in the municipality with the exploration of a wider itinerary through the Treviso foothills.
