The Valle dei Laghi between Trento and Lake Garda

Vallelaghi lies at the heart of the Valle dei Laghi, the narrow Trentino valley that acts as a natural corridor between the city of Trento and Lake Garda, following the course of the ancient Sarca river. The municipality was created by merging three distinct centres, Vezzano, Padergnone and Terlago, each with its own historical identity and settlement, now united in a single community spread across a territory marked by limestone cliffs, woodland and a chain of small lakes. This position along a major route has, since ancient times, made the valley a channel for communication and trade between the Mediterranean world and the Alpine one, a role still reflected today in the variety of landscapes and the wealth of historical evidence scattered among its villages. Travelling along the road that crosses the valley, views of the lakes alternate with terraced vineyards and sudden rocky outcrops, a sequence of settings that makes Vallelaghi a natural stopping point for anyone moving between the Trentino capital and the shores of Lake Garda.

Lake Toblino and the famous Castel Toblino

The most iconic image of Vallelaghi is undoubtedly Lake Toblino, on whose waters the famous Castel Toblino stands, one of the most photographed castles in Trentino. The fortress rises on a small rocky peninsula jutting into the lake, creating an almost fairy-tale scene in which the walls are mirrored directly in the water, surrounded by reed beds and vegetation that changes colour with every season. Over the centuries the building has gone through several phases, moving from a defensive fortification to a noble residence, and today it is a place open to visits and events, a destination for evening walks and a landmark for anyone travelling through the valley by bike or on foot. The small natural lake it overlooks is framed by rocky walls that heighten its sense of intimacy, while the path running along its shores offers ideal vantage points to admire the castle from different angles, especially at dawn and sunset.

The lakes of Terlago, Santa Massenza and Lamar amid nature and biotopes

Besides Toblino, Vallelaghi holds other bodies of water completing the mosaic of the Valle dei Laghi. Lake Terlago, formed by two connected basins, is surrounded by reed beds and damp meadows, a valuable habitat for waterfowl and wetland species, partly protected as a nature biotope. Lake Santa Massenza, with its clear, intensely blue waters, is also tied to the history of Trentino's hydroelectric power, with plants harnessing water from the mountain basins; on its shores stands the small village of the same name, known for Vino Santo production. Higher up, Lake Lamar offers a wilder, secluded atmosphere, framed by conifer woods and reached via trails inviting a quiet pause away from traffic. This concentration of lakes in a small area gave the whole valley its name and continues to attract naturalists, photographers and walkers.

The Ora del Garda wind and Vino Santo Trentino from Nosiola grapes

The climate of Vallelaghi is shaped by the Ora del Garda, the wind that rises from the lake northward every afternoon, bringing mild air and constant ventilation deep into the valley. This phenomenon, which regulates temperatures and reduces humidity in the vineyards, has made possible a highly refined viticulture, a key condition for Vino Santo Trentino DOC, one of Italy's rarest meditation wines. At its heart is the Nosiola grape, the only native white grape variety of Trentino, whose bunches are harvested late and left to dry for months on racks, in rooms ventilated thanks to the Ora del Garda, until reaching a sugar concentration allowing an extremely slow vinification, sometimes stretching over years. The result is a golden, sweet and complex wine, produced in limited quantities by a handful of local estates, a distinctive wine symbol of the territory and a reason in itself for wine-tourism visits.

Nature, cycle path and hikes among the lakes

Vallelaghi is also a territory designed for active tourism, thanks to a network of routes that lets visitors discover the valley at a slow pace. The Valle dei Laghi cycle path, part of the wider Trentino cycling network connecting Trento to Lake Garda, crosses the municipality alongside the lakes, offering a flat route suitable for families and cycle tourists, with stops possible near Toblino and Santa Massenza. Alongside it, a dense network of hiking trails climbs toward the wooded slopes enclosing the valley, offering panoramic views over the whole lake system and allowing access to more secluded spots such as Lake Lamar. The variety of landscapes, alternating bodies of water, rock walls, vineyards and broadleaf and conifer woods, makes the area appealing in every season: in spring and summer for the intense green and the chance to swim in some of the lakes, in autumn for the colours of the grape harvest and the woods, in winter for the quiet and the snow-capped profiles of the surrounding mountains.
