Valfloriana Between the Val di Cembra and the Val di Fiemme

Valfloriana occupies a peculiar position in the geography of Trentino: it lies on the left bank of the Avisio, the stream that carves out the Val di Cembra, yet looks culturally and administratively toward the Val di Fiemme, with which it shares customs, dialect and the calendar of festivals. The municipality spreads across a broad wooded slope that climbs from the valley floor to beyond 1,200 metres, over a territory of nearly 40 square kilometres marked by steep gradients and an exposure that alternates sunny slopes with shaded ravines. This hinge position between two valleys, both marked by a strong local identity, has made Valfloriana a place apart, with a character that does not fully coincide with either the wine-growing Val di Cembra or the timber-and-ski-oriented Val di Fiemme, but condenses some of their traits on a smaller scale, in a landscape of woods, hay meadows and small rural clusters.

The Carnival of the Matoci: the Wooden Masks

The strongest identity marker of Valfloriana is the Carnival of the Matoci, one of the best preserved archaic carnivals in the Alpine region, celebrated every year on Sabato Grasso with a procession that sets out in the morning and crosses the hamlets before converging on the piazza of Casatta. At the heart of the festival is the matòcio, the masked figure who wears the facèra, a hand-carved wooden mask made of stone pine, its face both beautiful and unsettling, capable of altering the voice and bearing of whoever wears it. Around the matòcio moves a small cast of fixed characters: harlequins, musicians, the bèla, the bride and groom, and the paiaci, in a re-enactment that recalls the old winter wedding processions once staged during the season free from farm work, when mountain communities organised mock masked weddings as a collective celebration. The parade, which also draws masked groups from other Trentino valleys and from the Aosta Valley, is accompanied by songs, dances and local specialities such as supa der orz and Casat cheese, in an event that is at once popular spectacle and ethnographic heritage handed down from generation to generation.

A Scattered Municipality: Thirteen Hamlets and the Life of the Farmsteads

In the administrative terminology of Trentino, Valfloriana is a scattered municipality: there is no single main town, but an archipelago of thirteen hamlets across different altitudes, from Ischiazza at 700 metres up to Sicina, the highest at 1,200 metres, passing through Barcatta, Casanova, Dorà, Montalbiano, Palù, Pozza, Pradel, Valle and Villaggio, besides the municipal seat of Casatta. This dispersal reflects mountain farming life, with small clusters of houses and farmsteads close to the hay meadows and pastures, often on the mid-slope, linked by mule tracks that still trace the local trails today. Three churches, dedicated to Sant'Antonio di Padova in Dorà, San Floriano in Casatta and San Filippo Neri in Montalbiano, mark the religious life of the hamlets. A dramatic chapter is tied to the flood of November 1966, which struck Ischiazza and Maso, forcing their evacuation and giving rise to the hamlet of Villaggio, while the two original nuclei remain uninhabited to this day.

The Woods, the Lagorai and Nature

The territory of Valfloriana is largely covered by forests of Norway spruce, larch and stone pine, the same wood from which the Carnival masks are carved, climbing in altitude until they meet the high pastures and rocks of the Lagorai, the porphyry massif that closes off the Val di Fiemme and the Valsugana to the south. From the highest hamlets of the municipality, such as Sicina, trails set off toward the passes and alpine pastures of the northern side of the Lagorai, a less trodden access point compared with other routes in the area, in an environment of silence and lightly humanised nature. These paths connect to the wider Translagorai hiking network, the long traverse that follows the massif's ridgeline from Panarotta to Passo Rolle among alpine lakes and flowering pastures, and represent for Valfloriana a quiet gateway to one of the wildest and least frequented corners of the Trentino Alps.

History and Experiences to Live

The name Valfloriana comes from the patron saint San Floriano, to whom the church in Casatta is dedicated, although a popular tradition traces it instead to the flowering meadows surrounded by fir woods that once characterised the landscape. The village's recent history holds a particular episode: in the 1946 institutional referendum between monarchy and republic, Valfloriana was the Trentino municipality with the highest percentage of votes in favour of the republic, almost 97 per cent, a figure local historians read as a mirror of a self-reliant community little inclined toward traditional hierarchies. Today the village lives on cattle farming, the production of cheeses and cured meats, and forestry, alongside a slow-paced tourism made of farm stays, walks among the hamlets and off-season visits. Visiting Valfloriana means alternating the discovery of its small rural clusters, hamlet churches and trails toward the Lagorai with taking part, calendar permitting, in the Carnival of the Matoci, the event that best tells the soul of this secluded corner of Trentino.
